The Montblanc Ferrari Stilema SP3 Limited Edition 599 can balance on its base and looks more like a blade than a pen. Crafted from titanium, its cap is angled to mimic the nose of the Ferrari Daytona SP3 sports car catching in mid-air, while the car’s distinctive louvres, on the front and rear bumpers, appear on both the barrel and front. . During a Zoom call, Flavio Manzoni, chief design officer of Ferrari, says:
Flavio Manzoni
“Together we wanted to imagine an object that was normative, not only in terms of shape, but also in terms of the new technical solutions at the heart of the object.”
Design theory
For the first time, German luxury brand Montblanc has reinvented the ink filling mechanism behind a semi-transparent red blade for this pen. Brand CEO Nicolas Baretzki notes that his collaboration with Ferrari began with the Great Characters collection, inspired by Enzo Ferrari. In a separate Zoom call, he says, “It’s an interesting journey we’re on with Ferrari.” “The relationship went so well that we decided to sign a much longer contract and in the end the idea was to create something exceptional”. The result is the limited edition pen of 599 units.
Elaborating on the design of the writing instrument, Manzoni says: “We wanted to create something very subtle. For example, we wanted to convey the feeling of an organic sculpture with rigorous geometric elements that intersect the main volume”. The intent was to give the pen an element of speed or rhythm, “which is a principle also used in the design of our cars”. The design, he says, pays homage to the Daytona SP3, the second car in the automaker’s Icon Series. Baretzki is eloquent about the design, calling it “a monolith.”

Luxury trends
Speaking of Montblanc, Baretzki notes: “We have seen extraordinary resilience of writing instruments during the pandemic.” Though there’s no study or empirical evidence, he explains, “I suppose, by staying at home, people have rediscovered the basic fun of putting pen to paper.”
Creation functionality
Flavio Manzoni is an architect by training, but now leads the Centro Stile Ferrari. He has publicly stated that he doesn’t think an SUV can be a supercar and therefore Ferrari stays away from ultra-luxury SUVs. That said, the designer, who has worked with Bugatti, Fiat, Škoda and Volkswagen, shared that good design should “think about function and performance.” He explains: “So you can always have a rational explanation of every single detail of our product. This is the same for any type of product we design: for a watch, a pen or whatever”.
When it comes to India, Baretzki observes, “Montblanc was, in fact, the first luxury house to officially import products into India.” Over the years, she points out, the brand has increased its customer interactions through boutiques outside of Delhi and Mumbai. The company took over distribution for the country three years ago after a five-year association with Titan, which Baretzki categorizes as “a planned transition for the company.” The goal now is the update: “to elevate the maison, bringing more experiences for customers; we are rethinking how to approach e-commerce in India, in order to reach a wider group of customers”. He notes, “Eventually, we have a lot of important collectors in India, so I want to make sure I can serve them properly.”
The Montblanc Ferrari Stilema SP3 LE599 will be available in selected boutiques in India from August 2023. Price: €27500 (In India, its price is yet to be announced).
