Apple wants to prevent disease, empower patients to “lead their own health care,” says the vice president of health

Apple wants to change the behavior of patients and providers, so they will use its data devices and tools to prevent disease, Sumbul Desai, MD, vice president of Apple Health, told The Hindu Business Line.

When asked about Apple CEO Tim Cook’s comments that the company will make its largest social contribution to health, he told the news: “If we can touch people’s lives in one way, where can we stop them from to develop disease, or actually be healthier and feel empowered and educated to lead their own health care, it doesn’t get more effective than that.”

Getting there will also require Apple’s healthcare tools to have “the same level of privacy from your technology that you would expect from your doctor,” said Dr. Desai, according to the February 28 story.

“For example, the heart rhythm notification feature that we introduced, it took us an extra year to release because we not only wanted to make sure we validated it from a scientific point of view, but also ensure user privacy,” he said to the Business Line.

He also reiterated that, unlike some of his fellow game-changers, Apple has no plans to provide health care.
