[ad_1]

Grant applications for Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2023 are now open! Open source students and novices aged 18 and older can apply during the registration period, which opened on March 20 at 18:00 UTC and closed on April 4 at 18:00 UTC.

Google Summer of Code is a global online program focused on onboarding new contributors to open source software development. GSoC Contributors work with an open source organization on a 12+ week programming project under the guidance of mentors. GSoC’s mission is centered around bringing new contributors into open source communities through mentoring and collaboration.

Since 2005, GSoC welcomes new developers to the open source community every year. The GSoC program has brought together over 19,000 contributors from 112 countries and 18,000 mentors from over 800 open source organizations.

2023 will be the 19th consecutive year of hosting the Google Summer of Code. We’re maintaining the big changes we made to the 2022 schedule, with one eligibility adjustment described below:

Greater flexibility in the length of projects (10-22 weeks, not a set of 12 weeks for everyone). Choice of project time commitment (medium at ~175 hours or large at ~350 hours) For 2023, we are expanding the program to be open to students and beginners in open source software development.

We invite students and newcomers to open source to check out the Google Summer of Code. Now that the applications are open, keep in mind some helpful tips:

Read the program rules, FAQs, Contributor Guide and application tips. Watch our new GSoC introductory video, as well as the GSoC Org Highlight videos and Community Talks series, to get inspiration from projects contributors have worked on in the past. Go through the list of 172 mentor organizations and use the filters to sort by programming language (python, C++, etc.) and by category (data, developer tools, infrastructure and cloud, security, etc.). Narrow the list down to 2-4 organizations and review their list of ideas. Contact the organizations via their contact methods listed on the GSoC site. Engage with your organization early and often.

Interested contributors can register and submit project proposals on the GSoC website between now and Tuesday, April 4, 18:00 UTC.

Good luck to all our candidates!
