The Pratt Institute is opening new facilities at the Brooklyn Navy Yard to expand its ongoing environmental and technological research.

The Pratt Institute is moving into building three of The Brooklyn Navy Yard, reports The Brooklyn Eagle. The university plans to use the 40,000-square-foot facility to expand its ongoing environmental and technology research.

Pratt’s Brooklyn campus is located a few blocks south of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, allowing the new Research Yard to be a relatively continuous expansion on the Institute’s ongoing relationship with the historic Navy Yard that is now a hub for technology, design and innovation in Brooklyn.

“We are thrilled to share with the wider community each year the incredible variety of community-based research and advocacy that Pratt’s faculty, staff and students conduct,” said Dr. Allison Druin, Vice Chancellor for the research and strategic partnerships in a statement released at Pratt’s Research Open House this spring.

The new building will house several research centers in robotics, information visualization, sustainability, community development, environmental surveying and digital archeology. Additionally, the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation has already designated select areas for several of Pratt’s research facilities.

One of them is the Pratt Center for Community Development, which has championed the site for decades and recently reported its growth in green manufacturing. And the Spatial Analysis and Visualization Initiative, or SAVI Center, which will develop information visualization tools to advance the missions of local nonprofits in space.

“What is wonderful is that once our research open day is over, the research yard will continue to host advanced research activities that develop solutions to real-world problems,” continued Driun.
