SAP Labs India, a subsidiary of German software company SAP, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Wednesday with Ramaiah Institute of Technology (MSRIT), a private engineering college based in Bangalore, to work on various projects related technological innovation and research.

The two entities have been working together on several projects since February 2023. One of the launched programs, called Young Upstarts, provides students with access to the tools they need to launch their own startups. Through this program, SAP offers in-person sessions to interested students at the MSRIT campus to help them acquire an entrepreneurial mindset, craft the ideal business presentation, and, among other crucial business values, needed to build a successful startup.

Students selected in the Young Upstarts program will also have the opportunity to work with experienced professionals to develop broad technical skills. Also, as part of the student-partner program, SAP Labs India has aligned with MSRIT to include two student partners (or campus ambassadors) in their development programs.

“Industry-academia partnerships are essential to advance research and development, foster innovation and deliver economic benefits. SAP Labs India’s partnership with MSRIT is another step to further our commitment to deepen collaboration between industry and academia and explore synergies between emerging and new technologies,” Sindhu Gangadharan, SVP & MD, SAP Labs India and Head, SAP User Enablement.

Gangadharan had told Mint in an interview published in November 2022 that India is one of SAP’s five hubs handling a larger part of the product portfolio such as those in the US, Germany and China and from a R&D base, India is the largest hub with more than 14,000 people of which over 12,000 are focused on R&D. He also said the company is “exploring innovation hubs, closer to the universities we partner with. We go where the talent is”.

According to a press release, as part of the collaboration, an All-India Hackathon will be held on the MSRIT campus, open to participation by students from all universities in India. SAP’s business teams will provide problem statements, upon which young minds will build technology-based solutions with the help of their mentors.

The joint efforts of MSRIT and SAP Labs India will help students unleash their latent potential and enable them to learn, explore and grow under the guidance of industry experts, said NVR Naidu, dean of Ramaiah Institute of Technology.

Another project in the pipeline is a special interest group called the Academia Alumni Network (AAN) as part of the research effort and collaborating center, with MSRIT as an early institution. Additionally, SAP Labs India also said it has transitioned to branding operations at MSRIT at jointly designated locations on campus.
