Leonardo is well positioned to grow in the US market, says Thomas Smitham, head of Leonardo’s US Business Development unit Over 7,000 employees across the country

With a highly skilled workforce of more than 7,000 employees in the United States, Leonardo US Holding Inc. and its subsidiaries are strongly focused on providing cutting-edge products and services to every branch of the US military, as well as a wide range of agencies governmental.

At the Navy League Sea Air & Space 2023 Exposition, taking place at the National Harbor in Maryland from April 3 to 5, Leonardo is showcasing high-tech products and services for a wide range of operational needs in the maritime sector. It is also taking the opportunity to highlight its core competencies and competitive positioning for US defense requirements.

Ahead of the exhibition, Thomas D. Smitham, head of Leonardo’s US Business Development unit, said, Leonardo is well positioned in the US market and we want to grow significantly here, also by continuing to develop our presence in the maritime market. domain. Our programs in the domain are already performing well and our solutions have the potential to meet a number of US requirements.

Leonardo DRS is the world’s leading supplier of naval propulsion and electrical energy conversion technologies aboard US Navy vessels, with the main systems aboard Columbia-class ballistic submarines and a growing number of international customers. Our naval information systems deliver reliable, resilient communications and computational resources to U.S. and allied navies, enabling them to share data faster and improve situational awareness. We are a leading integrator of naval computing infrastructure, network and data distribution, radar and control systems on all surface combatants and submarines of the United States Navy.

Leonardo, through its Philadelphia manufacturing facility, is prime contractor for the TH-73A Thrasher helicopter being supplied to the Department of Defense. The Thrasher will be used to train the next generation of student aviators in the United States Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Initial Operational Capability (IOC) was declared by the US Navy in January of this year.

The US Coast Guard already operates 14 Leonardo HC-27J aircraft for medium-range maritime surveillance. These platforms continue to deliver high performance and reliability across a wide range of Coast Guard missions. Recently the US Special Operations Command awarded Leonardo SpA a contract to design, modify, integrate and install an avionics upgrade package on the C-27J aircraft operated by the Special Forces and the Coast Guard.

The M-346 aircraft is Leonardo’s solution to meet the training requirements of the US Navy: both UJTS (Undergraduate Jet Training Systems) and TSA (Tactical Surrogate Aircraft). The M-346 is a proven training system integrated with a fully operational Live, Virtual and Constructive (LVC) environment, capable of exposing student pilots to the most complex and challenging operational scenarios.

Reference leader for international naval forces, Leonardo is currently one of the few companies in the world to offer a complete range of technologies for naval use, from its Combat Management System (CMS) to kinetic systems (naval artillery, torpedoes) up to systems such as sensors, communications and mission systems. The company’s Athena CMS is recognized as one of the best combat management systems in the world: its MK.2 upgrade is designed to integrate with a full range of radars including Kronos Dual Band and Power Shield, as well as other sensors and weapon systems in the company’s portfolio. Athena stands out for its modularity and flexibility in acquiring situational awareness, interoperability, and data logging and analysis.

In the domain of weapon systems, in addition to the cutting-edge 76/62 and 127/64 in medium and large naval calibers – Leonardo continues to innovate in small calibers, from the Lionfish 12.7 to the Marlin 30 and 40, available in various solutions with the own FCS (Fire Control System).

In the field of electronic warfare, Leonardo is exhibiting its BriteCloud expendable active decoy for aircraft, a life-saving countermeasure that provides high-tech protection from radar-guided surface-to-air and air-to-air missiles. Fired as a flare, BriteCloud contains a powerful miniature jammer that sends out convincing electronic phantom signals that seduce incoming missiles towards the decoy as it moves away from the aircraft. As the world’s first technology, BriteCloud is undergoing evaluation for potential service with the US military. The US Air National Guard (ANG) recently issued a field recommendation for Leonardo’s BriteCloud 218 variant, tested on US F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft.

The company is also promoting SAGE, a digital ESM/ELINT for RF intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. SAGE is suitable for a wide range of aircraft, from tactical UAS and light helicopters to the largest maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft. Also on display at Navy League Sea Air & Space 2023 is the Leonardos Osprey radar system, used by international customers for missions including defense, security, civil protection and environmental monitoring, search and rescue.
