About this software This software is an educational demonstration of natural language processing (NLP), an AI technology, applied to the adventure game The Portopia Serial Murder Case (created by Yuji Horii and first released in Japan in 1983) . At the time of the game’s original release, most adventure games were played using a command input system, where the player was asked to type text to decide their character’s actions. Free text input systems like these have allowed gamers to feel very free. However, they came with a common source of frustration: players knew what action they wanted to perform but couldn’t because they couldn’t find the right wording. This problem was caused by the limitations of PC performance and NLP technology at the time. It’s been 40 years since then and PC performance has improved dramatically, as have the capabilities of NLP technology. Using The Portopia Serial Murder Case as a test bed, we’d like to show you the capabilities of modern NLP and the impact it can have on adventure games, as well as deepen your understanding of NLP technologies.Natural Language Processing (NLP)Language Processing natural is a technology that allows computers to derive meanings from natural language, the kind of language we use in everyday communication. Deep learning conducted on a large set of text data allows the system to understand complex text inputs (NLU) and generate responses comparable to those written by humans (NLG). Natural Language Understanding (NLU) To interact with computers that use natural language, the computer must understand what its human partner is trying to say to it, regardless of the wording chosen. Natural language understanding is an area of NLP research that aims to make computers understand natural language correctly, the meaning of which can often be ambiguous. In this technical preview, the NLU is used to help the young detective understand the player’s instructions. Speech To Text (STT) Speech-to-Text, or Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), converts speech input into written text. Using this technology, players can give instructions using their voice rather than a keyboard. Note that a CUDA-capable GPU and a large amount of VRAM are required for a satisfactory experience. Natural Language Generation (NLG) Automatic generation of natural text is one of the most important research topics in the field of NLP. For example, research is ongoing into AI engines that can answer questions instead of human operators, as well as AI-powered chatbots, both of which are expected to have a wide variety of real-world applications. This technical preview originally included a feature based on Natural Language Generation technology, where the system would generate natural responses to questions that didn’t have a pre-written answer. However, the NLG feature is omitted in this release because the risk of the AI generating unethical responses remains. We thank you for your understanding. We will consider reintroducing this feature as soon as our research succeeds in creating an environment where players can enjoy the experience in peace.
Description of adult content
The developers describe the content like this:
Please note that in this technical preview, the player will take on the role of a detective who solves a series of murders, in the course of which he may encounter: illustrations depicting dead bodies (blacked out), bloodshed (bloody noses), and of a man shirtless, as well as descriptions of violence and drug dealing.
