Despite complaints about the slow pandemic recovery downtown, San Francisco and its tech scene are vibrant enough to attract new investment from one of Europe’s tech giants.
Enterprise software company SAP, Germany’s largest company by market capitalization, will officially open a new 30,000-square-foot office in SoMa on Thursday. About 500 of SAP’s 3,500 Bay Area employees are expected to use the 135 Townsend St. location as their primary office, a spokesperson told SFGATE, and workers began flushing in in early April. The company also has outposts in Palo Alto and San Ramon.
SAP builds and sells enterprise software products, counting Salesforce and Oracle among its competitors. In a press release, the company said the new office is intended to keep SAP close to early-stage startup founders and key technology partners in the city, as well as general technology innovation.
San Francisco is the capital of the technology industry and one of the top global markets for talent, said Yaad Oren, chief executive officer of SAP Labs US, in a statement. … It is a vital region. SAP is doubling down on our commitment to this epicenter of innovation with our brand new office and this next generation approach to work.
We help deliver on the promise of an intelligent, sustainable enterprise with our customers by nurturing relationships with the best technology companies associated with Silicon Valley, Oren added.
The official opening comes as San Francisco’s tech mainstays including Salesforce, Meta, Pinterest and Reddit lost office space and wider commercial vacancy rates hit a record high.
135 Townsend St. is one block away from Oracle Park and a few streets from San Francisco’s Caltrains station.
