A software engineer has died after falling from the 14th floor of Google headquarters, the NYPD has confirmed. Police responded to a 911 call Thursday and reported an unconscious person lying on the ground. The 31-year-old senior software engineer’s name was withheld pending notification of the family. A 31-year-old senior software engineer has died after falling from the 14th floor of the Google office building in New York City, the New York Post first reported.

Police responded to a 911 call around 11:30 p.m. Thursday, reporting an unconscious person lying on the ground at 111 Eighth Avenue on West 15th Street in Manhattan, the New York Police Department confirmed to Insider.

The engineer’s name has not been released pending notification from the family, the NYPD said. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Google did not immediately respond to multiple requests for comment from Insiders, made outside of normal business hours.

The New York Post reported in February the death of another Google employee, which police said was an apparent suicide in an apartment located not far from Google’s offices. The family has organized a GoFundMe page in his honor.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Statistics, there were 307 workplace suicide deaths in 2019, the highest level on record.

Among the layoffs that have hit the tech sector in recent months, Google employees have also been hit.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google’s parent company Alphabet, announced on Jan. 20 that the company would be laying off 6 percent of its 12,000-strong workforce.

Hundreds of affected workers have taken to social media such as LinkedIn to express their feelings. Many shared their dismay at the way the layoffs had been handled.
