We’ve all had the experience of carrying a bottle of water to work, school, or the gym and coming home still almost full.
We all also know that water is vital to maintaining our health, but too many of us simply don’t drink enough. But Tel Aviv-based smart packaging company impacX says it has a solution for everyone.
It has developed a smart cap that measures how much liquid is still in the attached reusable bottle and reminds you to drink by vibrating, lighting up in a variety of colors or sending a message to your phone.

The purpose is to bring better health and wellness to people using smart technology, Yoav Hoshen, senior vice president of sales and development at impacX, tells NoCamels.
Patented technologies in the form of sensors, a mobile app, brand dashboards, cloud servers, and algorithms are all conveniently packed into the seemingly mundane bottle cap.
What we have developed in impacX is a kind of intelligent packaging platform that comprises three elements, says Hoshen.
One is the technology built into the cap that can track water to the liquid level inside a bottle. We’re doing this by sending a laser beam inside the bottle and measuring how long it takes for the laser to reach the cork.
The second part is that this smart cap is actually connected to a consumer-facing app that helps personalize all of your hydration. So, the first time you go through an onboarding process, where you are asked for information such as your weight, your age, the opportunity to connect it to sports tracking devices and your Apple Watch or any third-party app, like Apple Health or Google Fit, he says.
Not only does it build your own personalized hydration goal for that specific profile, but it can also take into account the impact of the amount of activity you’ve been doing during the day and even the weather in your location, all from the sensor on the water bottle. .

Users’ personalized hydration plan is calculated based on individual needs, health and lifestyle.
If you have a specific target, let’s say you are pregnant, or play a sport activity or want to achieve other goals, there are specific modules in the app that you can say, I’m pregnant, I’m in my third month or I’m going to run, or you can even automatically link it to your sports tracker, explains Hoshen.
The technology behind it is very complicated, but your user experience and consumption journey is pretty straightforward. Simply get lights and vibration reminders on the bottle.

The bottle shows a red light when the platform identifies that the user must have drunk more water within a certain time, and a green light when the user is on the correct hydration path.

Proper hydration has been shown to have numerous benefits including improving alertness, reducing obesity, aiding in digestion, improving energy levels and general well-being, and slowing down ageing.
However, an alarming 47 percent of Americans don’t drink enough water, according to a January 2023 survey by research institute CivicScience. The impacX team also says its case studies show that people really do need reminders to drink properly, and its smart bottle prompts can change behaviors, and not just when it comes to H2O intake.
Whether you want to lose weight or want to improve your sport, there are specific plans in the app that are constantly being improved to help you, says Hoshen.
There’s also an option for owners to interact with others and share their progress, which Hoshen says provides a great sense of community.
The impacXs product is available to international companies and Israeli individuals. So far, he has collaborated with pharmaceutical company Bayer AG, international food giant Danone, natural mineral company Font Vella, and most recently sports drink maker Gatorade, which incorporates unique technology from Israeli startups to manage the drinking habits of athlete’s water.
It’s powered by our hardware and software engines within the cap, within their app, and within the cloud service behind it, says Hoshen of the Gatorade deal.
“We are looking for an innovative technology company to partner with that can deliver personalized daily hydration advice and change the way athletes hydrate and fuel themselves,” said Drew Palin, senior director of marketing for Gatorades and innovation manager.

impacX launched the smart bottle in Israel as a nationwide pilot, according to Hoshen, with plans to expand to other territories as well. So far the response has been good.
We get hugely positive results from all kinds of people: young and old; people who play sports or not; pregnant women; people who have health problems and apparently most of them don’t drink enough water, he says.
We’re here to actually help you avoid this situation and help you reach your daily hydration goals.
