Preview: LA Tech at the C-USA Outdoor Championships

Links to the RUSTON story| The Louisiana Tech men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams will compete this week at the 2023 USA Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Denton, Texas. The meet will take place Thursday, May 11 through Sunday, May 14 at UNT Track & Field Stadium and is hosted by North Texas. The bout will be streamed on CUSA.tv for Saturday and Sunday events. Tickets can be purchased daily for $15 for adults and $10 for youth ages 3 to 17.

The four-day championship event will feature 42 combined athletics events starting with the heptathlon at 2.45pm and the decathlon at 3.15pm on Thursday 11 May. The two multi-events will conclude on the second day, starting at 2.45pm (decathlon) and 4.30pm

Field events will begin on Friday 12 May, with the men’s hammer throw at 2.00pm followed by the women’s hammer throw at 4.30pm. The men’s and women’s 10,000m finals will complete day two starting at 8pm for women and 9pm for men.

Day three will offer a full lineup in track and field with the men’s discus and men’s and women’s long jump starting at 1pm. The Women’s 1500m at 5.30pm will kick off 14 scheduled preliminary running events before continuing with the Men’s 200m. spring at 20:40 Saturday’s program will conclude with the women’s (21:00) and men’s (21:15) bell tower run.

The final day of competition on Sunday will begin on the court with the women’s shot put, men’s triple jump and men’s javelin throw at 1pm. After that, the track will begin with the 4x100m relays, with the women’s event at 6pm and the men’s shortly after at 18:05

The women’s and men’s 1500m will start at 6pm, followed by the finals of the 14 preliminary events on Saturday which will start with the women’s 100m hurdles at 6.35pm. The championship weekend will conclude with the women’s 4x400m relay at 20.50 and the men’s 4x400m relay at 21.00

Charlotte returns as the 2022 defending men’s and women’s champions and beat their respective teams at the 2023 indoor championships this season in Birmingham.

LA Tech plans to send 38 athletes, led by Rodney Heath Jr. and Johannon Murray.

Heath Jr. ranked as one of the top sprinters in the region and the nation this season and etched his name in the LA Tech record books in his first season with the Bulldogs. Heath Jr. holds three of the top four times in the 100m, including a program best time of 10.12 by the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas. His 10.12 also ranks him 25th this season in the country and 13th in the Division I East Region.

The Kentucky transfer holds five of the top six times in the 60m indoor season this year, including setting a program record of 6.64 on two occasions, once at the Texas Tech Relays and once at the C-USA Indoor Championships where Heath Jr . won silver in the event.

Murray enters as the heptathlon outdoor reining champion from the 2022 Conference USA championships, where she had the fourth-best score in program history with 4,937 points. She also holds the sixth-best scoring in the LA Tech record books with 4,708 points as of the 2021 season.

Murray will be looking to add more hardware to her 2023 season after winning bronze in the 2023 C-USA Indoor Championships in the women’s pentathlon. In Murray’s four seasons at LA Tech, she posted the four best pentathlon marks in LA Tech history, including No. 1 of the program of 3,549 points.
