Abstract
Is ChatGPT the beauty or the beast? The AI to Advance Well-being and Society Research Hub at the University of Hong Kong (HKU-AI WiSe), led by prof. Victor OK Li and Dr. Jacqueline CK Lam, was the pioneer and leader of AI for social good. Since 2013, their team has been working with academics from Cambridge University, Harvard and MIT to use AI technologies to advance well-being and society, long before the heated debates about ChatGPT and how AI can be driven for the beauty instead of the beast. Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLM) are advanced artificial intelligence technologies that use deep learning algorithms to generate content, such as text, images and video. LLMs, such as ChatGPT, are particularly powerful because they can process and understand large amounts of natural language data and produce coherent and contextually relevant responses. The benefits of LLMs include their ability to generate high-quality content quickly and efficiently, which can save both businesses and individuals time and resources. They can also provide personalized responses and recommendations based on your data and preferences. However, LLMs also have many drawbacks, such as the perpetuation of prejudices and injustices, hallucinations, unreliable reasoning and inconsistent responses. In this talk, we study how to shape LLMs so that you can enjoy their advantages while avoiding their disadvantages, in the context of decision making. It is important to prioritize ethical considerations and ensure that LLMs are trained on diverse and representative data. Furthermore, implementing transparency and accountability measures can help prevent unintended consequences and ensure that LLMs are used responsibly.
Biography
Victor OK Li holds SB, SM, EE, and ScD degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from MIT. Prof. Li is Chair of Information Engineering and Cheng Yu-Tung Professor of Sustainable Development in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He is the director of the HKU-Cambridge Clean Energy and Environment Research Platform, the HKU-Cambridge AI to Advance Well-being and Society Research Platform and the HKU-Cambridge AI for Neuro-disease Research Platform, which are interdisciplinary collaborations with Cambridge University. From April to August 2019, and in June 2023, he is Visiting Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Technology of the University of Cambridge. He was the head of EEE, Assoc. Principal (Research) of Engineering and Managing Director of Versitech Ltd., the commercial and technology transfer arm of HKU. He serves on the board of directors of Sunevision Holdings Ltd., listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. He co-founded and serves as chairman of the board of Fano Labs Ltd., an artificial intelligence (AI) company specializing in natural language processing. Previously, he was a professor of electrical engineering at the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, California, USA, and director of the USC Communication Sciences Institute. His research interests include big data, artificial intelligence, optimization techniques and their applications to societal problems. In January 2018, he was awarded a $6.4 million RGC theme-based research project to develop deep learning techniques for personalized and intelligent air pollution monitoring and health management. Sought after by governmental, industrial and academic organizations, he has lectured and consulted internationally. He has received numerous awards, including the People’s Republic of China Ministry of Education Changjiang Chair at Tsinghua University, the UK Royal Academy of Engineering Senior Visiting Fellowship in Communications, the Croucher Foundation Senior Research Fellowship, and the Order of the Bronze Bauhinia Star, Government of the HKSAR. He is a member of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences, IEEE, IAE and HKIE.
