Apple Tests Generative AI Tools to Compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT – Bloomberg News

July 19 (Reuters) – Apple (AAPL.O) is working on artificial intelligence (AI) offerings similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, Bloomberg News reported Wednesday, sending its shares up as much as 2% to a level record.

The iPhone maker has built its own framework, known as ‘Ajax’, for creating large language models (LLMs) and is also testing a chatbot that some engineers are calling ‘Apple GPT’, the report said, citing people familiar with it. of the matter.

The company did not respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Apple has held off any big moves in AI so far and even avoided mentioning the buzzword at its developer conference in June, in stark contrast to other tech giants like Alphabet (GOOGL.O) and Microsoft (MSFT. Or) who have made bold moves to incorporate the revolutionary technology.

Shares of Microsoft, Nvidia (NVDA.O) and Alphabet fell more than 1% after the report.

Apple, however, has subtly pushed advanced AI into some of its products like Apple Photos, messaging devices, and the recently launched Vision Pro mixed reality headset. However, analysts say the company is lagging behind peers in incorporating the new technology.

Apple’s flagship AI product, the Siri voice assistant, has also stalled over the years.

Bloomberg’s report says several teams are involved in the latest AI effort, led by John Giannandrea, the company’s head of machine learning and artificial intelligence, and Craig Federighi, the top software engineering executive at Apple.

Apple’s new virtual assistant summarizes text and answers questions based on the data it was trained with and is being used internally for product prototyping, according to the report. Employees say the tool essentially replicates Bard, ChatGPT and Bing AI and works like a web application.

Apple doesn’t yet have a concrete plan for the tools it’s developing, but it aims to make a significant announcement related to artificial intelligence next year, according to the report.
