Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 could be a lot cheaper than we expected – BGR

About two months after the presentation of this year’s Samsung folds, there is no shortage of rumors about the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Flip 3. The two phones will join the Galaxy S21 FE during an Unpacked press conference in August, which would have been reserved for the introduction of the new Notes. There is no new note this year, which Samsung is rumored to discontinue. The current shortage of chips is the official excuse for Samsung’s decision, even though the Korean handset maker is reconsidering the Note’s future.

The transition from the Galaxy Note to the Galaxy Z foldable looks natural. Previous reports said Samsung may be looking to increase revenue by selling more foldable phones this year, even if there are no Note 21s in stores. Rumors so far this year suggest that Samsung’s new foldable devices will address two major concerns about this form factor, and a new report seems to indicate that Samsung may indeed be poised to solve the worst thing about foldable devices: price.

Foldable phones suffer from two serious problems. First of all, they are more expensive than traditional smartphone versions. Secondly, they are more fragile. Paying more for a phone with fragile moving parts isn’t the best proposition for most smartphone shoppers looking for high-end phones.

But the new Fold 3 and Flip 3 could solve both of these problems. Several reports stated earlier this year that Samsung has been working on durability improvements for the two devices. These include a stronger UTG glass cover that will bring the S Pen holder to the stylus, as well as water and dust resistance certification.

A rumor said a few weeks ago that Samsung is also ready to make significant changes to the prices of the brand new folds. The Flip 3 could start at around $ 1,000, which is the new “normal” price for high-end devices like the iPhone 12 Pro. The Galaxy S21 Ultra is even more expensive, at $ 1,199.

The original Flip started at $ 1,380 in early 2020. The Galaxy Z Fold started at $ 1,999 last year.

A brand new report from SamMobile claims that Samsung is looking to reduce the prices of the Fold 3 and Flip 3 by 20%. This would bring the Flip 3 and Fold 3 starting prices to around $ 1,100 and $ 1,599, respectively. These prices may be out of reach for some consumers, but they are much better than last year’s starting prices. Samsung usually offers a lot of incentives to reduce the upfront cost for new devices, and new foldable devices should receive the same treatment.

Samsung showed earlier this year that it is willing to significantly extend free trials for foldable phones and has already cut prices for current models. These are indications that Samsung is actually aiming to convert more buyers to its foldable devices.

Reducing entry prices for its new foldable phone would also help Samsung keep the competition at bay. Huawei’s brand new foldout may not have a great future outside of China, but Samsung has to worry about newcomers ready to offer more affordable folds to buyers. Xiaomi launched its first folding a few months ago, priced around $ 1,600 in the markets where it is available.
