The largest platforms that fill the internet, such as Amazon, Twitter, Spotify, Reddit, and other major news websites, including CNN, The Guardian, and The New York Times, have faced a huge disruption to their content delivery network ( CDN).

The culprit of the global disruption is the Fastly CDN. The famous network provider has confirmed that it has experienced a global outage.
The Financial Times product manager, via TechCrunch, initially speculated that the outage was due to a glitch that Fastly encountered.
Engadget said the problem was tracked and configured. On the other hand, TechCrunch reported that the outage was resolved quickly, after an hour.
Fastly’s answer
The company assured on its state website that they are investigating the global CDN disruption. He then updated that “the problem has been identified and a fix is being implemented.” As such, he promised that “customers may experience an increase in source load when global services return.”
Fastly’s status page also lists countries in North America, South America, Europe, Asia and South Africa that have experienced “degraded performance”.
What is the CDN?
TechCrunch added that CDN is an integral part of the overall Internet infrastructure. As seen on the recent outage that multiple websites have suffered. More specifically, as businesses run their site on servers around the world, CDN’s role is to be the proxy server that carries cache data for larger media files.
Multimedia contents, such as videos and photos, load faster with the help of CDN. It’s faster than retrieving data directly from company-owned servers.
As for Fastly, it has precisely provided video streaming and image optimization for its customers.
Affected Websites
In addition to the websites mentioned above, HBO Max, PayPal, Vimeo, Shopify were also part of the outage. Other news sites like the BBC and the Financial Times were also included, according to Engadget.
Additionally, Bleeping Computer noted that these websites were also affected: TechRadar, The Verge, GOV.UK, and TomsGuide.
When users visited the websites, they were greeted with a 503 error or a “connection error” message.
Meanwhile, Tech Times remains unaffected and is fully operational.

The current outage that Fastly has faced is similar to the one CloudFare experienced on August 30, 2020. It has affected Hulu, Discord, Steam, Microsoft (Xbox Live), Blizzard and EA. Additionally, Fastly outage sites like Twitter, Amazon, and Reddit also faced the previous outage.
Other widely used CDNs besides Fastly and Cloudflare are Amazon Web Services and CloudFront, TechCrunch also noted.
Elsewhere, the Apple Card also recently suffered a break.
