Augmented reality is a place where Google has made great strides over the years, but not all apps or use cases have been successful. This week it was revealed that one of Google’s first uses of AR, an app called simply “Measure”, is shutting down.
In 2018, when Google took out Tango and went all-in on ARCore, the company brought Measure’s clever idea to any Android phone with the technology to back it up. The concept is simple. Using augmented reality, a user could get a rough measurement of an object using only the phone’s camera / software. It was clean enough but, at least in my personal experience, a bit inconsistent.
Despite over 850 million ARCore devices in circulation, however, Measure is on the wane.
The change was actually made quietly and went unnoticed until the Android police spotted the change. Google apparently mentioned in a recent change log for the app that the latest version was actually the “final version” of Measure.
Final version. No further updates will be published.
This app is no longer supported and will not be updated. Users who have previously installed this app can continue to use it on compatible devices.
There is both good news and bad news here. If you have used Measure at any time in the past, the app will continue to work if installed on your device. It should also be available through the Play Store, but the results may vary. New users, however, will not be able to download the app via official means. Google is also done with developing the app, which means that unless drastic occurs, updates are done.
Measure’s last major update was released in 2019.
Regarding the arrest, a Google spokesperson said:
They were no longer able to support ongoing maintenance of the Measure app. Instead, we recommend trying one of the many alternatives available on the Play Store.
Notably, a Google experiment essentially copied this experience to the web.
