WhatsApp has launched an interesting update for all JioPhone and other KaiOS-based feature phones. Feature phone users will now be able to make voice calls on WhatsApp as the company has enabled WhatsApp VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) for KaiOS-enabled devices around the world. The update will be available to all smart feature phone users with the latest version of the app on KaiOS devices around the world equipped with 512MB of RAM. It goes without saying that India has many feature phone users and this new WhatsApp update will definitely work to their advantage.
The voice calling feature on KaiOS will also help people save money as the app will now allow voice calls over the internet using Wi-Fi or mobile data. This means that users can save their voice top-up package or top up their numbers with a minimum amount. They can spend more money to top up their internet packages as calls would be included in this.
Speaking about the new feature, Matt Idema, COO of WhatsApp said: “People are relying on WhatsApp now more than ever to communicate and stay in touch with loved ones. We want to support communities using lighter operating systems in many places in the world. Bringing WhatsApp voice calls to KaiOS-enabled devices helps us connect the world privately through a simple, reliable and accessible service to everyone, regardless of the type of mobile device they are using.
WhatsApp and KaiOS technologies have worked closely together to get the voice calling feature on phones to ensure that people with such phones have access to the technology needed to communicate easily and economically. KaiOS was launched way back in 2019 and it was only thanks to this operating system feature that phone users were able to use WhatsApp to send text messages, voice messages and share multimedia content. The Facebook-owned company said in a statement that WhatsApp is now the best KaiOS non-system app with the most monthly active users (MAUs) in the world.
Speaking about the collaboration with WhatsApp, Sebastien Codeville, CEO of KaiOS Technologies, said: As the demand for instant and effective communications has increased in the COVID-19 era, it is critical to ensure that this transformation can also be achieved in emerging markets and those who are less digital savvy, at a greater speed and scale. Together with WhatsApp, we are taking another significant step towards making essential and useful services accessible to all, including disadvantaged communities, seniors looking for simple devices and those using KaiOS devices as a companion phone. Now with the voice calling function, users can easily make a call anytime and anywhere in a convenient way.
It is important to note that WhatsApp VoIP is available on most new and existing KaiOS devices with 512MB of RAM and the latest version of the app. So users need to update the app first. If you are buying a new device, the VoIP function will be included in the latest version of WhatsApp, which is pre-installed at the time of shipment.
