Naughty Dog’s new job postings suggest The Last Of Us Part 2 Factions will be his game.
Naughty Dog is currently hiring for a standalone multiplayer game that may very well be the factions component excluded from The Last of Us 2.
A new job announcement posted by Naughty Dog has revealed that the studio is hiring for an unspecified indie multiplayer game. The two new announcements released this week revealed that the studio is looking for a level designer and gameplay scripter to help with “the new Naughty Dog adventure”. The project will be his very first standalone multiplayer game.
“We were looking to bring the same level of ambition and quality as our signature, story-based games into this unique multiplayer project,” the announcement states. Naughty Dog’s focus tends to focus on in-depth single-player stories, something you don’t have to look beyond The Last of Us for evidence of. Speaking of which, the game referred to is expected to be the lost multiplayer component of The Last Of Us Part 2.

As with the first game, The Last Of Us 2 was expected to have its own multiplayer mode, Factions. Months before the sequel hit the market, Naughty Dog VP Neil Druckmann revealed that the sequel would not have a multiplayer mode. Instead, the studio’s resources focused on making the base game the biggest it has ever made. More than 300 Game of the Year awards later, mission accomplished.
However, it appears that at some point The Last Of Us 2 had a multiplayer mode, unfinished. The studio even talked about it, promising fans of the franchise that it would come sometime after the sequel’s release. Footage has also leaked online of what appeared to be an enhanced version of Factions from the original game, further suggesting that the sequel’s multiplayer has been in the works for a while.
If Naughty Dog’s new standalone project is to be another version of The Last Of Us’s Factions, chances are it will be very different from the original game. It will have to offer much more than the first to secure its release. Additionally, new announcements and comments made earlier suggest it may even tell another chapter of The Last Of Us story. As for what fans of The Last Of Us have to look forward to, a PS5 remaster of the original game is in the works and apparently the story for Part 3 has already been written.
