Samsung may have pulled out of solo exhibitions at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC), but the company will continue to participate virtually in the mega event later this month. And it looks like the Korean company will take the opportunity to share some details about its upcoming smartwatches: the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Watch Active 4.
The company’s online-only session at MWC 2021 will take place on June 28 (19:15 – 20:15 local time), where it will talk about a “new watch experience”. In the session description on MWC’s website, Samsung said it is “reimagining smartwatches, creating new opportunities for both developers and consumers.” While the company does not go into detail, it is quite evident that the Galaxy Watch 4 series will be present at the next show in one way or another. Maybe Samsung will unveil the new watches? We’ll see.
The new Wear OS or the Galaxy Watch 4 itself?
If you’ve been following recent developments on upcoming Samsung smartwatches closely, you may already know that they will run Wear OS. The company is returning to the Google platform after six years, after using Tizen OS all this time. However, it’s not the Wear OS we see in other OEM’s watches. Samsung and Google have collaborated to develop a new version of the platform. It’s more like a unified platform that will bring the best of Tizen OS and Wear OS.
The two companies promise faster app launch times, a more powerful wristwatch designer, improved stock apps, longer battery life (better energy efficiency), customizable user interface, and much more. The Android-based platform means it will also be easier for developers to bring their apps to Samsung watches. They don’t need to rewrite apps for the Tizen platform again. This will ensure a larger app ecosystem, which was a major drawback of the Tizen OS.
Long story short, many changes are coming to Samsung’s range of smartwatches soon. So when the company says “new watch experience,” it could mean the new Wear OS, rather than the watch itself. However, there is a lot to expect.
In addition to the new watch experience, Samsung will also talk about the Galaxy ecosystem and mobile security at MWC 2021. The company claims to “improve security by giving people the protection they need in an open and connected world.”
MWC 2021 will take place from 28 June to 1 July in Barcelona. Many big names withdrew from exhibits in person during the event due to concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this year the organizer of the GSMA event took a hybrid approach, allowing companies to participate virtually. So stay tuned as we cover all the big announcements from the upcoming mega event.
