The Google Pixel Fold phone will continue its production and release this year. Google may have stopped production of the Pixel Watch, but its foldable Pixel Fold phone will be coming this year.

The leak published in August 2020 revealed that Google was planning to release its first foldable Pixel phone in late 2021.

According to the TheElec website, Samsung will begin manufacturing foldable OLED panels this October for the upcoming foldable phones from Google, Xiaomi and Vivo, all of which will be revealed in late 2021.

Google hasn’t exactly kept its foldable phone plans a secret. In 2019, the company posted patent applications for its foldable screens and admitted that it has been prototyping the patents for some time.

Google told CNET in an interview that it didn’t have a clear use case yet. Now, it looks like Google has a leaflet that may be almost ready to be announced.

According to 9to5Google, the code name of the patent at the time was Passport. In May, a new reference was spotted in the Android 12 code, along with other codenames believed to be the upcoming Pixel 6 and Pixel 5a 5G.

TheElec said it will have a single 7.6-inch panel that folds inward, while Vivo’s next phone will have an 8-inch main screen and a 6.5-inch external display. He didn’t mention the screen size of the new Xiaomi phone.

However, it’s unclear whether a Pixel Fold would feature a Google-designed display itself, although that’s possible. Samsung acts as a contract manufacturer for many other companies, for example producing some of Apple’s own processors.

Either way, part of the screen sandwich may still largely belong to Samsung itself. ETNews reports that Samsung will be supplying its proprietary ultrathin cover glass to other smartphone makers and Google is expected to use it.

Xiaomi already announced a foldable phone earlier this year called the Mi Mix Fold. TheElec has stated that Oppo will delay a new foldable phone to 2022, with a 7.1-inch main screen and a smaller outer screen between 1.5 and 2 inches diagonally.

Noisy details of Google Pixel Fold

Aside from the release date, the possible price of the foldable phone has also been questioned. Based on the price range that Google has linked to its other foldable phones, there is a direction Google could go when it comes to the rate.

Right now, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2 costs $ 1,799, while the Galaxy Z Flip and Motorola Razr 5G cost $ 1,199 and $ 1,399 respectively. With traditional Google pricing, the Pixel Fold may be closer to the $ 1,000 mark.

As for the design, Google’s design plans for the Pixel Fold come from multiple patents filed by Google for foldable devices.

A patent shows a device that opens on a hinge to reveal a larger screen, with the option of pulling out an additional display for the added screen. A patent also shows a device that could fold in three places, though it’s not confirmed whether that’s what the Pixel Fold would look like.
