The next dinosaur horror survival game, Instinction, looks like it could be a spiritual successor to the Jurassic Park Trespasser game.
Although E3 2021 unveiled a new installment in the Jurassic Parkgame franchise with the new Jurassic World Evolution 2 trailer, Hashbane’s Instinction may have set the bar in terms of expectations for dinosaur-based games. The little developer from New Zealand showed some impressive content during the E3 Future Game Show in a brand new trailer, harking back to a gaming era that could look like 65 million years ago.
Instinction was initially announced in early February 2021 with a concept trailer. While the trailer didn’t turn many casual gamers’ heads, the premise of a modern dinosaur horror survival game certainly appealed to many. Hashbane previously stated that Instinction is thought to be somehow a spiritual successor to Capcom’s Dino Crisis games from the early 2000s. However, the trailer also harks back to an even older dinosaur survival game.

The trailer for TheInstinction, which debuted at E3 (via Games Radar), features a semi-futuristic laboratory populated by humans. However, they are not alone as the woods and landscape around them are full of dinosaurs. In the trailer, several dinosaurs that appeared to be Triceratops, Pterodactyl, and Spinosaurus, roamed the landscape as they hunted for (or were hunted by) humans. The human characters shown are equipped with modern weapons, so it doesn’t feel like instinct is set in the very distant future.
The trailer features lots of lush landscape scenes and a vast valley, though it’s unclear where Instinction takes place. Little is known about the game’s plot, except for the “we came to protect them” line of text. It would seem, therefore, that the game takes place at some research facility. It could also be possible that there are human enemies or some other external force attacking the dinosaurs that players may have to fight.
Although the game drew comparisons with Dino Crisis, it’s hard not to compare with another, even older, dinosaur survival game: Trespasser. The game, released in 1998, was itself a spiritual sequel to The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Set a year after the events of the film, the player found himself stuck on Isla Sorna, with the need to escape the dinosaurs and seek rescue. Trepasser also featured the voice of Richard Attenborough, who played Jurassic Park founder John Hammond in the first two films in the series. While not as well known as Dino Crisis, the Trespasser game stood out for its essential gameplay. Whatever the confrontation between players, Instinction appears to be a worthy successor.
