Coromon will bring its Pokmon more puzzle game to Nintendo Switch in the first quarter of 2022

Coromon twists the Pokémon formula with how he approaches dungeons, customization, and puzzles for his monster-tamed gameplay. It’s already been announced for PC and mobile, and during the Freedom Games 2021 Showcase at today’s digital Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), developer TARGsoft said Coromon is coming to another platform: Nintendo Switch.

It seems like a good choice, as Coromon showcases images similar to early Pokémon games and is also about, you know, catching monsters. TARGsoft has added a puzzle level; As you explore the maps, you find yourself struggling with these little puzzles. And as your monsters level up, you can play with their stats, giving more depth to RPGs and other monster taming games.

Your character works for a high-tech company and your goal is to extract Titan Essences from the world. As the name suggests, the Titans are larger beasts you find in the dungeons and you and your squads of monsters must defeat them to get the essences and learn more about these world milestones.

And this journey will lead you into a story full of twists full of interesting events and side missions to do, said TARGsoft’s Marcel van der Made. He is the CEO and story writer for the studio, as well as being the second ridiculously ambitious kid. (TARGsoft stands for Two Ridiculously Ambicious Guys. Van der Made is the second and fellow CEO and programmer Jochem Pouwels is the first.)

TARGsoft has been working on Coromon for over seven years and the project is the result in part of their passion for Game Boy, Pokémon and great puzzle adventures like Zelda.

We love games and have spent thousands of hours playing those games, said Marcel van der Made. Why not create a game with every aspect we love and put it together for the ultimate RPG experience. This is how Coromon came to life.

And, of course, it leads to the studio name Two Ridiculously Ambicious Guys.

Full of potential

The colors show how strong your Coromon can be. Two can be of the same species, but one can be brown and the other is purple. This is part of the potential TARGsoft system. Coromons gain XP as they fight, and you can use those points to customize their stats. Van der Made says you can do this to create a glass cannon (meaning with powerful attacks but weak health and defense) or create one that absorbs enemy damage.

It also has a brilliant system (this reminds me of the foils in Pokémon card packs), which plays on how to allocate Coromons stats. They also come in three versions: normal, powerful, and perfect (think of these as evolutions in Pokémon).

Nice work if you can get it

In games like Pokmon or Monster Rancher, your goal is to become the best trainer or collector possible. And while this is an important aspect of Coromon, you also work for a large company. You get paid for your efforts and along the way you meet other employees who are there to help you.

They actually pay you to fight, van der Made said. I like this one, as one of my few complaints with Pokémon is starting every adventure at home and getting a goodbye from your mom. There is also a spatial aspect, you will find out from the story itself.

Puzzles and traps

While exploring a sandy dungeon, we encountered some dart traps. It’s all about timing, avoiding the darts as you make your way through that part of the maze. Some of these dart traps have patterns that you need to watch out for. Other traps include hatches, and some of these combine to do some bad tests. You also have buttons to move the walls. None of these are difficult, but they do require you to pay attention to your surroundings and break the game cycle of finding and fighting monsters.

[The puzzles should be accessible enough so that you can find out [the solution] yourself. And some have people who are there to explain the mechanics, van der Made said. Some of the puzzles are really rewarding. Get a special item to solve puzzles that aren’t really needed to progress further. We were really trying to make it accessible, but also complex enough for those who like to explore.

The name game

Coromon has over 120 creatures. Finding names for so many monsters could be difficult, especially when you want to avoid using the ones that sound like Pokémon names.

Turns out the TARGsoft team enjoyed it.

This is a really fun process, actually. We brainstorm with about three people who work there. Sometimes you grab a beer and have a long brainstorm session with it, van der Made said.

They looked at the monster designs and found ideas (some fun) until they found the ones that worked for them. One aspect of Coromon’s localizations is that you don’t need names that translate well from one language to another; you just use a good name from that language for the monster. They try to stay away from certain pronunciations, as this can make it more difficult to name three varieties of the same creature.

The studio also ran some naming contests with its community.
