Polfeldt, a 17-year veteran, takes a gap year

Ubisoft Massive has announced that its longtime CEO, David Polfeldt, will step down from his position to take on a new role within the company in 2022. Polfeldt has been with Ubisoft for 17 years, 12 of which he spent as CEO of Massif.

Ubisoft Massive, which directs development on The Division shooter series, will also be the studio responsible for both Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and the recently revealed role-playing game set in the Star Wars universe. It seems like a strange time for the developer to attempt such a severe change in staff, as the studio is embarking on two incredibly important and large-scale game development projects. It would appear that Polfeldt sees the signing of the Star Wars deal as the limit of his time with the studio.

“When we signed Star Wars and finally completed our beautiful Eden building in 2020, I felt an overwhelming sense of completion, as if I had achieved everything I once dreamed of,” Polfeldt said in an official statement. “Building on the solid foundation of The Division, Avatar, Snowdrop and Ubisoft Connect, the studio is in fantastic shape and I am exceptionally grateful for what we have accomplished together.”

The weight of Ubisoft Massive’s new titles will now fall on the shoulders of the new unnamed CEO, who is expected to officially take over the role in October. Polfeldt takes a gap year from Ubisoft for the rest of the year, before returning to a new location in 2022.

Ubisoft has been engaged in a corporate restructuring of its staff in recent months, necessitated by the 2020 exodus or the removal of several senior executives, named in the firm’s sexual harassment disputes and subsequent investigations.
