Guilty Gear Strive: Giovanna’s Combo Guide

[ad_1]

While Joan is a simple character to learn, there are many hidden layers in the President’s guard in Guilty Gear Strive that involve her combos.

In Gulty Gear Strive, Giovanna is a fiery character who excels at pressure, forcing her opponent to play defensive during her ambushes. His normal attacks are enough to slowly open the opponent, and his combos are easy enough to deal sustainable damage without too much effort.

For newcomers to the series, Giovanna is a great place to start as many of her combos are simple to perform but are also useful gateways into Strive mechanics, including Roman Cancel Drift and input buffering. As with any Strive character, the possibilities with Joan are practically endless, meaning the following combos should serve as entry points to the character’s overall gameplay.

For the sake of readability, the universal number notation used in most fighting games will be used to break down its combos into a readable format. For the uninitiated, number notation in Guilty Gear Strivere refers to the use of numbers to reflect all eight directions similar to that of a keyboard.

Far shot S> 5HS> 214K

This is a simple combo that follows the basic rule of how combos work in Guilty Gear Strive, specifically connecting one normal to another normal and ending with a special or overdrive. “which is not only easy to hit confirmation, but also easy to deal a decent amount of damage. What’s also special about his Far S, aside from the added range from lashing out at it, is that it can connect to its heavy blow through the use of Gatling Combo.

Using a Gatling Combo is the act of linking one normal into another, ending the linking with a special move, which in this case is Giovanna’s or Sepultura’s 214K. Sepultura is a versatile special that Giovanna can use to cover distance in neutral as she is easily connected by her standing or crouching kick, slash and slash attacks. It is also the name of an amazing Brazilian metal band, which was most likely intentionally named given the love of series director and composer Daisuke Ishiwatari for heavy metal.

236K> RC Dashboard> 5S> 2HS> 214K> 214K

This combo may seem daunting on paper, but it introduces new updates to Strive’s Roman Cancels and how it incorporates into characters like Giovanna. Canceling a dash in a Roman Cancel, or Roman Cancel Drift, reduces the gap more easily, allowing Joan to continue the combo.

The offensive use of Roman Cancels during a combo will initiate a “slow down” state, allowing for follow-ups that are not possible under normal circumstances. This makes Trovo’s hit confirmations absolutely lethal as Giovanna can combo from almost full screen, catching opponents by surprise.

5S> 2HS> 214K> delay 5K> 214K> 214K

Giovanna’s standing cut has different properties at close range than those seen with her “lightning legs”. Her close range slash is a knee that slightly lifts her opponent into the air, which coupled with a heavy crouched slash on Trovo, will force the enemy into a state of dexterity, allowing her to continue the combo while her opponent is helpless. By slightly delaying his standing kick, he can link up with two special Trovos, ending the combo.

Anti-Air CH 2HS> delay 214K> 5K> 6HS, HS, HS

Giovanna’s anti-aircraft, aside from Strive’s universal 6P, is her heavy crouching slash in which she extends her leg in the air vertically, catching her opponent in the air in a juggle. In counterattack, the opponent is suspended in the air long enough for a dexterity, which can be linked to Sepultura. Players will need to be aware of the fluctuating state the opponent is in, otherwise subsequent attacks will be heard, so the combo must be entered with a slight delay to compensate.

5S> 2HS> 214K> delay 5K> 6HS, HS> Dash RC> 5S> 2HS> 214K> 236K

This combo combines the philosophies of the previous combos and adds them into one great combo, bringing the opponent enough for a wall break and scene transition. Players can apply what they have learned from previous Roman Cancel combos and delay the following inputs just enough to connect the entire combo. If the opponent is taken to the wall and on the brink of a wall break, Joan can adjust the combo accordingly.

These five combos are enough to get started with any novice Giovanna, although, as previously mentioned, these combos scratch the surface of Giovanna’s potential. AsGuilty Gear Strive is relatively new, optimal combos and set-ups for various fighters, including Giovanna, are constantly updated and improved. With enough practice, players can learn the game with Giovanna and decide to continue playing it or switch to more technical characters.

Guilty Gear Strive is now available on PC, PS4 and PS5.
