iOS 15 is a big update, and we have the endless list of the best iOS 15 features to prove it. The upcoming iPhone software update took a considerable amount of time at Apple’s WWDC 2021 event, and a lot of documentation about the changes coming to the iPhone can be found on the Apple website.
Given everything that’s happening with iOS 15, it’s understandable that some features may have escaped your attention. And while not all changes are as significant as SharePlay for FaceTime, rearranged notifications, or an overhauled Safari browser, they still think of making iOS 15 a better overall experience.
The public beta of iOS 15 isn’t here yet, but the developer beta is out, which gave some people a chance to delve into iOS 15. We took their results and compared them to Apple’s feature list. to get a list of significant improvements and enhancements that probably didn’t catch your attention at first.
Here are some less-announced iOS 15 features you should be aware of before the public beta arrives in July and the full release of iOS 15 this fall.
iOS 15: Siri can share stuff
Each iOS update gives Siri new powers, and this time around, Apple seems to have come up with an impressive update for its digital assistant, at least on paper. We’ve already talked about how Siri is getting faster, thanks to voice processing on the device (at least if you have an iPhone XR or later), but one Siri improvement that’s been lost in shuffle is its ability to share photos, pages. web, news articles and other stuff.

Let’s say you are looking at a photo. Ask Siri of iOS 14 to share it with a contact and you will receive an apology as to how this is beyond the current capabilities of the digital assistant. But iOS 15’s Siri can share that image without a problem, even recognizing which contact you meant.
And in iOS 15, if you ask Siri to share something on your iPhone screen that it can’t, the assistant will offer to take a screenshot and send it instead.
iOS 15: Apple ID recovery
Apple came up with the idea of an Apple ID when it started selling songs through iTunes and needed a way to enforce digital rights management so that only you (and a few authorized guests) could play iTunes purchases. Since then, the Apple ID has grown to encompass all Apple services, and if you ever lose access to your password or account, you’ll need to use a specific technical term.
iOS 15 solves this problem by allowing you to designate trusted friends and family as your account recovery contact. That way, if you ever lose access to your Apple ID, you can tap on one of those contacts to make the recovery process easier.
In a related move, Apple also lets you designate legacy contacts for your Apple ID. These contacts will be able to log into your Apple account should you move on to the next life, making your Apple News and Apple Fitness subscriptions the least of your worries.
iOS 15: 5G performance improved

This will only affect anyone with an iPhone 12 model or iPhone 13 devices coming out in the fall as they will also be 5G ready, but Apple says it is improving some system features and built-in apps to connect to faster 5G networks. The end result should be improved iCloud backup times, better streaming from Apple TV and Apple Music (and potentially third-party apps), quick iCloud Photo sync, and quick downloads of Apple News Plus articles for reading. offline.
iOS 15: Accessibility improvements
Accessibility changes are often the most overlooked in an iOS update, and it’s a shame because these accessibility changes often make iPhones easier for everyone to use.
iOS 15 boasts a number of accessibility improvements, but my favorite so far is the ability to customize the display and text size settings app by app. The function does what it says on the label, you can enlarge the text in one app, leaving it the same in others. Another improvement that will surely come in handy for users with low vision will be the ability to move your finger across a photo to determine a person’s position relative to other objects in that image.
iOS 15: Where Is it locates devices even when they are turned off
It is not particularly new that Apple’s Find My app can track the location of any Apple device when it connects to a network which is one of the main reasons for the existence of the app. But that trick only worked with apps that were active.

iOS 15 expands Find My’s location powers by including devices that have been disabled in its searches. (Presumably, this means you’ll get the device’s last known location, but we’ll find out exactly what Apple has in mind once the iOS 15 public beta arrives.) According to Apple, the expanded feature means you’ll be able to track devices even if they have run out of battery or if a thief has turned them off.
Additionally, Find My will be able to locate devices even after they have been wiped, another feature intended to thwart the resale of stolen Apple devices. To this end, the Hello screen of those devices will show that the device is locked and discoverable.
iOS 15: FaceTime mute alerts

Apple has spent so much time talking about the changes to FaceTime that include spatial audio and a new grid view on top of the aforementioned SharePlay feature, some less flashy but useful improvements have been pushed aside. For example, Apple’s video chat app will now feature a mute alert to let you know if you’re trying to talk and no one can hear you. You’ll have the option to tap on that alert, simplifying the unmuting process.
Yes, this is a feature that other video chat apps offer does not pass a morning meeting when Google Meet tells me that the audio is muted when I do so much that it clears my throat. But it’s still a necessary addition to FaceTime, and the fact that the alert is selectable should make the whole feature easier to manage.
iOS 15: Wallet now stores passes
The Wallet app on my iPhone running iOS 14 currently includes an invitation to an event I attended six months ago and previously had expired tickets for round-trip air travel, train travel, and baseball games cluttering mine. digital wallet until I have deleted them.
Things are changing in iOS 15, as Wallet will now automatically move expired boarding passes and event tickets to a separate list. The change means that the cards, tickets and passes that are relevant to you right now are front and center and the clutter disappears. And if you’re the type who likes to hang digital cards as a memento, they are still available in another part of Wallet for you to look back fondly on.
iOS 15: Spotlight searches from the lock screen
I find the Spotlight tool to be a quick and easy method to track down apps and other stuff stored on my iPhone, and it will be even more useful in iOS 15 now that Spotlight can search for photos. But accessing searches means unlocking the phone and swiping down from the home screen one more step when all you want to do is search for something vital.

iOS 15 eliminates the need to unlock the phone. Scroll down on the lock screen too and the Spotlight search bar appears, accompanied by the usual roundup of suggested apps. From there, you can search for anything on your iPhone. And, if you don’t use Face ID to unlock your device or your iPhone is in someone else’s hands, Spotlight searches from the lock screen are limited to the web, so your messages, apps, and photos stay for you. eyes only.
iOS 15: Camera improvements
Apple hasn’t spent much time talking about the camera improvements in iOS 15, a curious omission given the importance of camera features in distinguishing the best phones. But there are improvements in iOS 15 to speak of, even ahead of the inevitable camera improvements coming via iPhone 13 models this fall.

Your panoramic shots in iOS 15 should look better, as Apple says it’s improving geometric distortion and doing a better job of capturing moving subjects at least if you have one of the four iPhone 12 models. (Presumably, this feature will work. even with iPhones coming this fall.) There should be less image noise and banding in panoramas too.
When capturing a QuickTake video in iOS 15, you can swipe up or down to control the zoom. This is another of those features that require an iPhone powered by an A12 Bionic chip or later.
iOS 15: Translate’s new face-to-face view
iOS 14 introduced a translation app to the iPhone, and one of its best features was a conversation mode that showed two languages translated side by side, so you could actually have a conversation with someone, even if you spoke different languages. This feature returns in iOS 15, with another viewing option that should make such conversations even more natural.

Translate has limited you to a horizontal view in iOS 14 as shown in the screenshot above, but iOS 15 adds a face-to-face mode. The part of the screen in front of you shows your statements in English and translations from 10 other languages; the other half of the screen flips it over and displays it so that the other person can more easily see what you are saying.
iOS 15: Use temporary iCloud storage for iPhone configurations
Here’s a feature that will only come in handy when setting up a new iPhone, but you’ll definitely appreciate it, if your available iCloud storage space is limited. iOS 15 will allow you to use iCloud backup to move data to a new iPhone or iPad, setting aside the temporary storage space needed to make a temporary backup.
The additional storage is free and lasts up to three weeks.
iOS 15 Outlook
We’ve just scratched the surface of iOS 15’s overlooked edits, which include an easier way to save photos in Messages, Interactive Memories in the Photos app, and the ability to skip silences in iOS 15’s Voice Memos app. just the features we know as we spend more time with the iOS 15 beta, looking for previously hidden improvements and enhancements to emerge.
