In recent years, display manufacturers in the TV and monitor markets have aggressively pushed curved screens to consumers. By advertising their more cinematic form, these curved panels almost try to make flat screens look uncool. Of course, not everyone could shop in all that curved marketing and have a preference for more traditional displays. Looking to address all market segments, Samsung is launching four new gaming monitors in its Odyssey line to deliver all the goodies gamers have come to expect, but this time in a non-curved shape.
At the top rung of the ladder is the Odyssey G7 G70A model, a 28-inch screen that boasts a resolution of 3840×2160 pixels and a maximum refresh rate of 144Hz. This display boasts the best the Samsung Odyssey line has to offer, including support for AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and NVIDIA G-SYNC anti-tear technologies, Auto Source Switch + for a seamless transition between video input sources, and multitasking capabilities. such as Picture-by-Picture (PBP) and Picture-in-Picture (PIP). The monitor also supports 4K 120Hz resolution via HDMI 2.1, making it a terrific partner for your PS5 or Xbox Series X.
The 27-inch G50A Odyssey G5 model, on the other hand, is the gold medium, offering nearly the same features with a more manageable size and hopefully more affordable price. The standout feature of the QHD monitor is its 165Hz refresh rate which, along with AMD FreeSync Premium and NVIDIA G-SYNC, makes visual lag a thing of the past.
Last but definitely not least are two Odyssey G3 model G30A screens available in 27 and 24 inches. These screens peak at 1080p resolutions and 144Hz refresh rates, still enough for decent gaming experiences. It lacks NVIDIA G-SYNC support but at least remains compatible with FreeSync Premium. Unfortunately, the monitors also crash on Display Port 1.2 and HDMI 1.4, losing support for more advanced video graphics technology like variable refresh rates, among other things.
Samsung Odyssey 2021 monitors expand the lineup to suit all types of gamers with different preferences and, most importantly, different budgets. That said, the company has yet to reveal details on availability for the four monitors.
