Microsoft OneDrive users can now use the software to edit their photos thanks to a new update.
The company has introduced new photo-related features for OneDrive, which elevates the software from being a simple cloud storage for photos. These features include the ability to crop and rotate images. Users can also adjust the color and lighting of their photos and even organize and view them via OneDrive for Android.
The new update is “the start of a series of new improvements OneDrive is making to photos over the next year,” the company said in a statement posted on its website.
The company also reiterates its commitment to an “updated photographic experience”, all while maintaining user privacy.
It is important to note that photo editing is currently limited to JPEG and PNG formats. The features are also only available for OneDrive for web and OneDrive for Android. New features require Android version 6.0 or later and the OneDrive app version 6.3 and later.
An update for iOS will be available this year.

Rotate and Flip: Images can be rotated left and right 90 degrees. Likewise they can be rotated 180 degrees. Incremental degree rotation has also been added so that users can straighten or skew photos as they wish.
Light and Color Adjustments: Users can adjust the brightness, contrast, exposure, color saturation, highlights and shadows of the photos. Before and after photos can be viewed even after editing.

OneDrive users also have the option to save the edited photo as a new file or overwrite an old file. If a user wants to access the original photo, Microsoft says version history can be used to retrieve the image.
The update makes OneDrive photos and videos viewable on TV thanks to the Chromecast streaming device. It also allows a filtered view of the photos on the software. Users can choose to view only photos in the Pictures folder or all photos stored on OneDrive.
The new photo features are so far only available for personal OneDrive accounts. The features will be available for work and school OneDrive accounts by the summer.
Future update on organizing photos
Microsoft has planned another update within the next couple of months for those looking to organize photos on their OneDive.
According to The Verge, the next update will include a setting that creates folders based on photo upload source. The uploaded images will then be automatically saved in the corresponding folders. For example, screenshots will be saved in an automatically created folder for those images.
