Should I buy an iPhone 11 this year? It’s actually not a strange question

[ad_1]

The iPhone 11 is by no means the newcomer on the block. Apple has been selling it since the fall of 2019, when it launched for $ 799. Right now, however, it’s available for $ 599 on Apple’s website, creating a tempting deal. In fact, that price may be all you need to hear to make a decision. But what if you’re still wondering whether to buy the iPhone 11 right away or wait for the expected drop in the price of the iPhone 12 this fall? The short answer is – well, there’s no short answer – because it will depend on your individual wants and needs, as well as how you prioritize them.

All Apple

CNET’s Apple Report newsletter provides news, reviews and advice on iPhone, iPad, Mac and software.

For example, do you mind using an iPhone that looks a bit dated? Or do you think saving several hundred dollars is more important than carrying the latest smartphone? What about 5G: how important is it to you? If your current phone is on its deathbed, it makes sense to earn $ 599 for the iPhone 11 – or even the more expensive iPhone 12 – sooner rather than waiting for the next fall launch. But if you have some leeway, here are some questions to ask yourself. (For the purposes of this article, I’m assuming you’re currently using an iPhone.)

5G connectivity: iPhone 11 does not have 5G. But do you really need it right now?

One of the biggest missing features of the iPhone 11 over the iPhone 12 – and presumably the iPhone 13 – is 5G connectivity. The iPhone 11 is an LTE-only device, and if you’re still not interested in next-generation wireless technology (service is patchy in the US after all), then the iPhone 11 should fit you perfectly. Remember, 5G debuted on the iPhone 12 line, and accessing faster 5G bands depends on where you live, buying iPhone 12 makes your purchase more future-proof.

Andrew Hoyle / CNET display quality: You won’t get a 120Hz refresh rate on an iPhone 11 (or iPhone 12)

The iPhone 11 uses a crisp LCD screen that refreshes at 60 frames per second or 60Hz. Apple swapped the iPhone 12, equipping it with an OLED screen, although it kept the display at 60Hz just like most phones. OLEDs are typically more vibrant than their LCD counterparts, with richer contrast and deeper blacks. If you watch a lot of videos on your iPhone and want a superior viewing experience, an OLED screen might make more sense to you. The iPhone 13 will likely boast an OLED panel as well, although Apple is expected to increase the refresh rate to 120Hz. The faster refresh rate will result in smoother and faster scrolling between apps and websites.

Apple’s Wallet app will be able to store driver’s licenses in iOS 15.

CNET Software Support Screenshot: How long will the iPhone 11 get iOS software updates?

The 2015 iPhone 6S is currently the oldest supported iPhone that will receive the next operating system, iOS 15, when the general release arrives in the fall. (The public beta of the upcoming iPhone iOS 15 operating system is already here, and here’s how you can download it.) Based on that and some quick mental calculations, we can deduce that Apple plans to provide iPhone support for up to six years after launch. . As a result, with the iPhone 11, unveiled in 2019, you can rest easy knowing that you can expect updates until 2025.

Durability and water resistance: how long do you want your iPhone to last?

One of the big improvements of the iPhone 12 is the material of its display. Apple calls it “ceramic shield” glass. Made by Corning, the ceramic protective glass covering the phone’s display is apparently harder than most metals. In fact, we can confirm that the iPhone 12’s ceramic shield is tough. Our iPhone 12 drop tests show that it protects the hardware from drops of up to 9 feet. (CNET’s iPhone 12 Mini drop tests have produced similar results.) So, if you’re a big klutz and are prone to slip and fall, pouncing for this current iPhone is a wise move (or just getting an iPhone case. really nice). Keep in mind that the iPhone 11 is also not a delicate treasure. It also survived CNET’s drop and water tests and won a CNET Editors’ Choice Award. You can read our iPhone 11 review for more details.

Price and budget: how much do you want to spend on an iPhone?

As I said earlier, Apple is selling the iPhone 11 from nearly two years ago for $ 200 less than when it first launched. The iPhone 12 starts at $ 829, but you can expect the price to drop in the fall or every time the iPhone 13 is launched. Although it’s too early to know for sure the prices of the iPhone 13, CNET has made some educated guesses. . It’s likely to come at the same starting prices as the iPhone 12. Depending on how the iPhone 13 turns out, getting a heavily discounted iPhone 12 might be a better option.
