Epipole, the retinal video imaging specialist, has begun work on a collaborative project of 1.1 million people to develop a technology solution for the diagnosis of intracranial pressure (ICP).
The project is funded by Eureka’s Eurostars program and is a collaboration between Epipole, Danish Statumanu ICP and the University of Southern Denmark.
Intracranial pressure is increasing pressure within the skull, typically due to a brain injury or other medical condition. But brain injuries can be complicated to detect, and ICP is typically diagnosed via spinal tap (lumbar puncture), which is both invasive and expensive. Being able to quickly and easily measure changes in ICP in a non-invasive way is critical to making the right decisions about a patient’s treatment.
The Eurostars project will combine Epipoles portable video ophthalmoscope technology with Statumanus AI software, which can evaluate images of blood vessels in the retina to provide instant assessment and continuous monitoring of changes in the ICP.
Epipoles epiCam technology allows doctors to scan the retina using real-time video and then extract high-quality images. epiCam will be integrated with the Statumanus AI software to acquire the retinal data necessary for the software to carry out the diagnosis.
Jakob Find Madsen, founder and CEO of Statumanu ICP, said: After reviewing all the retinal cameras available on the market, Epipole is the ideal partner for this project. Being a lightweight portable camera that also shoots high resolution video, epiCam has all the features needed to make this innovative system a success.
Dr. Craig Robertson, founder and CEO of Epipole, added: We are thrilled to have secured Eurostars funding for this exciting collaboration with Statumanu. We look forward to helping revolutionize the way intracranial pressure is diagnosed to support better clinical decision making and ultimately improve patient outcomes.
After completion of the technology integration, a clinical study will be conducted at the University of Southern Denmark to evaluate the solution’s effectiveness.
