Dyson Micro 1.5kg review: ultra-light cleaning

[ad_1]

Verdict

Exceptionally light in the hand, the Dyson Micro 1.5kg is super easy to move around and great for small jobs. It is primarily designed for hard floors, so those with a lot of carpets should look elsewhere. As good as this cleaner is on hard floors (and it is), the Dyson Omni-glide is a better touch.

Pros Very light Brilliant cleans hard floors Simple controls Cons Relatively short battery life Not designed for carpets Availability UKRRP: 299.99 USARRP: $ 399.99 not designed for carpets) or as a handheld for detail cleaning. Battery life You get a maximum of 20 minutes of battery life with this cleaner, although its efficiency means you’ll be able to cover a lot of ground in this amount of time. introduction

As cordless vacuums have become more powerful and able to accept plug-in models, many have also seen an increase in size. However, sometimes all we want is a simple, lightweight cordless vacuum cleaner that can handle more basic jobs, and that’s where the 1.5kg Dyson Micro comes in.

At just 1.5kg, it’s the lightest cleaner in the Dyson range and it’s also one of the cheapest. Exceptionally easy to use and great for light work, the Micro 1.5kg excels on hard floors; but it’s not that good on carpets. It is also slightly outclassed by the Dyson Omni-glide, which has a more flexible head.

Design and features Exceptionally light No trigger: dedicated on / off controls Good range of accessories

This year, Dyson released two hard floor vacuum cleaners: the 1.5kg Dyson Micro under review and the Dyson Omni-glide (available July 2021). The Micro is a bit cheaper and 400g lighter than the latter, and uses a traditional cordless design, rather than the tubular Omni-glide.

Viewed from the side, the 1.5kg Dyson Micro sports a similar design to the larger cleaners in the range, such as the V15 Detect, only it’s much smaller. Dyson has redesigned the controls for this model.

While most of its cleaners have a trigger to turn it on and off, this vacuum cleaner has a dedicated power switch at the top and a Max button to activate Boost mode. For those who struggle to hold a trigger, these controls are much easier to handle. If you’re used to regular Dyson cordless cleaners, the lack of a trigger will likely seem odd for a while – I instinctively felt the trigger every time I picked up the vacuum.

This model doesn’t have a removable battery, so you can’t buy a spare and replacing a faulty one will be a little more complicated. Charging is done by connecting the adapter directly to the vacuum cleaner or by installing the wall mount and dropping the vacuum cleaner.

I recommend installing the dock on the wall where possible, as this also provides space for the supplied tools. You get a mini motorized brush, great for stairs and furniture, and a crevice nozzle / dusting brush combination.

Also included is the motorized soft head, which was built for hard floors; there is no carpet brush available with the Dyson Micro. The floor head you get is good, but not on par with the one that comes with the Omni-glide; the latter is much more flexible and allows you to place the vacuum cleaner on the ground. Here you get a good movement but more in line with that of a normal vacuum cleaner.

In portable mode, in particular, the luminaire gives its best, making it easier to whiz around areas or lifting the vacuum cleaner to vacuum around the ceiling. Sure, there are lighter vacuum cleaners, like the Hoover H-Handy 700 (which is only a handheld model), or cleaners that are almost as light but bulkier. Here you get the best of both worlds: reach and light handling.

There is only a 0.2 liter bin installed in this model, so it will need to be emptied quite regularly. This small bin helps reduce the weight and size of the vacuum cleaner and reinforces the fact that the Dyson Micro 1.5kg is designed for small apartments or spot cleaning.

It empties like other Dyson cleaners – slide the ejection mechanism forward, pushing the dirt into the bin. You can also completely remove the bin for easier cleaning and there’s a washable filter on the back.

Performance Cleans well on hard floors Carpet performance is not that impressive Low battery life

I measured the raw performance of the vacuum cleaners in AirWatt (a combination of suction and airflow) to see how it stacks up against rival vacuum cleaners. In standard mode I measured it at 34.64 AW, which is slightly lower than most regular cordless cleaners on their standard setting, going up to a more impressive 92.67 AW on Max. This is a more powerful touch than the ‘Omni-glide.

While raw power provides an indication of performance, the quality of the floor head can also have an impact. I started with my hard floor test, sprinkling a teaspoon of rice on the floor. With a single pass of standard power, the Micro 1.5kg left a clear path through the mess, with no rice falling out at the end. This shows how good the fluffy head is, picking up dirt as it passes over it so the vacuum cleaner doesn’t need as much suction to put the mess in the bin.

This vacuum cleaner is not designed for use with carpets, but I have also put it to the test in my carpet tests. Starting with the regular carpet test, I sprinkled a teaspoon of flour on the test mat. With a single pass on the standard setting, the cleaner collected most of the clutter.

If you take a closer look at the cleaned section, however, you can see that a fair amount of dirt is left.

I increased the power in Max mode. The results were better this time, but there were still dirt spots.

Next, I combed the pet hair into the test carpet. Here, I used the standard mode with the motorized mini tool, which did a great job of taking out all the mess. This is a handy accessory for pet owners who want to clean their kennels or soft furnishings.

Finally, I tested the edge performance on tiles, sprinkling a teaspoon of flour up to the baseboard. In standard mode, the performance was pretty good, even though there was some flour left over from the baseboard.

Switching to full power, I was able to clean up most of the clutter, with just a quick swipe with the crevice tool needed to remove the last traces of dirt.

While the hard floor performance was decent, the Dyson Omni-glide gave a better show on the carpet, with its double floor rollers that work surprisingly well as they are designed for use on hard floors. As such, the Dyson Micro 1.5kg is really only built for hard floors.

Battery life is estimated to be a maximum of 20 minutes, although this is without motorized tools. Expect a couple of minutes less with the motorized floor brush attached. With maximum power, only five minutes of use. Charging times are a fairly standard 3.5 hours.

While battery life is relatively short, the quality of the floor head means you can get a surprising amount of vacuuming on hard enough floors to thoroughly clean a large room or tackle a small apartment.

If you want a super light vacuum cleaner for hard floors, whether as a stain remover or for a small apartment, then this is a powerful and flexible tool.

If you can spend a little more, the Omni-glide offers similar features but is more agile, while there are cheaper vacuum cleaners if price is your primary concern.

Final thoughts

The lightweight body makes the 1.5kg Dyson Micro exceptionally simple to use and super easy to pack at home. However, as good as it is, this hard floor specialist is slightly outclassed by the Dyson Omni-glide, which, while a little heavier and a little more expensive, is easier to move around.

Those looking for a cheaper Dyson cordless vacuum cleaner may find the larger Dyson V7 a more flexible choice, and you can check out other alternatives in my guide to the best cordless vacuum cleaners.
