Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 emerges in new renders and could read body fat

Last week, unofficial renders gave us a first glimpse of what the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 4 would look like. But it looks like it may have been mislabeled, as an official-looking promotional image shows an identical wearable device tagged as Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 “.

The image of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, pictured above, is from 91mobiles which obtained them via a trusted industry source. The design of the purported marketing material, from the fonts to the layout, definitely looks like Samsung’s print material, although it wouldn’t exactly be the hardest style to imitate.

Assuming the images are legitimate, the most surprising thing is that the physical rotating bezel for app selection and navigation no longer exists. This was never part of the Galaxy Watch Active range, but the second generation introduced a digital rotating version to compensate, in which a tactile hum simulated real resistance. Its plausible Samsung has similar plans here.

That said, it’s possible that Samsung will keep the physical version for another model. Well-connected Max Weinbach, who has a solid record when it comes to tracking Samsung’s movements, says both styles exist.

In any case, for the device pictured, 91mobiles claims it will be available in 40 and 44mm sizes with built-in GPS. The Galaxy Watch 4 could be quite rugged, boasting 5ATM water resistance, Gorilla Glass DX +, and MIL-STD 810G durability. As you can see from the images, the watch will be available in black, white, dark green and rose gold.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4: Body Composition Readings

In terms of new innovations, Weinbach has another interesting suggestion. The Galaxy Watch, he claims, will come with a BIA sensor. This stands for bioelectrical impedance analysis and is the system that smart scales use to estimate the percentage of body fat, in which a small electrical current is sent through the body. Since fat and muscle have a different composition, the resistance that the electric current faces can be used to estimate the body composition of each.

A wearable device would likely have the user complete the circuit by touching a part of the watch with their hand. From a users perspective it should work the same way as the ECG scan on the Galaxy Watch 3.

While the benefits of having such a technology on your wrist should be obvious, getting it to work reliably is a pretty big challenge. BIA sensors built into scales also have patchy reliability, so building a wrist version could have its problems. But with Apple reportedly moving forward with blood sugar and other health metrics in future Apple Watches, it certainly wouldn’t be surprising if Samsung pursued something like this.

If the 91mobiles loss is accurate, we should know soon enough. The site reports that Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Watch 4 next week on June 28, so we hope to have a new candidate for our list of the best smartwatches soon.
