As the world settles down with the 14nm CPU that is Intel’s 11th generation Rocket Lake-S desktop CPU, the chip maker has been working hard, preparing to launch a new generation of CPUs, along with a new socket. To that end, an image of a CPU socket cover was recently leaked indicating the upcoming LGA18XX.
The leaked image was posted by famous hardware leaker @momomo_us. Specifically, the labels on the CPU cover indicate that the cover is designed to fit both LGA18XX and LGA17XX sockets. As for the previous socket, it is relatively obvious that the name refers to the LGA1800 socket, which is expected to debut with Intel’s 12th generation Alder Lake-S desktop CPUs.
According to our previous reports, CPUs of that generation are expected to be physically different from currently existing Intel CPUs, taking on a larger and longer design and layout. Making it slightly similar to the design of Intel Core Extreme CPUs in the past. Of course, these are all speculations and we just have to wait until September this year to find out more.

Slightly more interesting is the LGA17XX holder on the cover, which indicates that it could be used and reused on AMD’s upcoming AM5 socket motherboards as well. For the uninitiated, it was previously reported that AMD could switch from its current PGA design to an LGA design, for its next-generation 5nm Ryzen Zen 4 range. This would be the second time the CPU and GPU manufacturer has made such a transition, the first with its Ryzen Threadripper HEDT CPUs.
However, there is also a more likely rumor that the CPU coverage may be compatible with another Intel CPU line, Meteor Lake, although, at this point, there is very little information on the line at this stage.
