This mode was developed by Ripple Effect Studios, the Los Angeles-based team formerly known as DICE LA, and will be fully unveiled at EA Play Live on July 22.

Studio chief Christian Grass said this new mode, whatever it is, will feature “fan favorite” maps from across the Battlefield franchise.

“I can’t say much about it, but what I can say is that one of the components of this experience we are creating is that we are adding some of the fan favorite maps in Battlefield 2042. But the whole experience, you have to wait a bit. more before we reveal what it is, “he said.

Another new mode coming to Battlefield 2042 is Hazard Zone, and that too remains largely a mystery. DICE’s Oskar Gabrielson joked that “it’s not the classic battle royale”, but instead aims to blaze his own path.

Hazard Zone is a “high-risk, high-tension team-based game mode. It’s not the classic battle royale, it’s a very contemporary mode,” he said.

“It’s also something the team has been thinking about for many years. It has some really special components and really leans on the super powers of Battlefield and DICE at the same time,” Gabrielson added.

Hazard Zone will be revealed this fall, ahead of the launch of Battlefield 2042 in October, Gabrielson said.

Even while chatting, Gabrielson reflected on the Battlefield 2042 announcement. He said he hoped he was feeling excited and excited to be able to show the game to the world, but instead he felt “pure agony”. This is because the developers had been working on Battlefield 2042 for years and no one knew for sure what the reaction would be.

Battlefield 2042 is a multiplayer-only title that will grow and evolve over time with new seasons of content that will add more to the game. DICE has yet to formally reveal its post-launch strategy and timing, but Gabrielson joked that DICE has “a couple of tricks up its sleeve” that will be announced later in connection with the Battlefield 2042 live service component. acknowledged that Battlefield 2042’s live service features are based on Respawn’s teachings on Apex Legends.

Gabrielson and Grass also talked about where they see the FPS headed in the future. Grass said FPS games have a lot of room to grow on the social side. He noted that, with traditional ball-based sports like soccer, fans can simply go out and kick or throw a ball to enjoy the sport in a different context than watching it on TV. He said video games have room to grow in this capacity as well; they can become social spaces where people not only meet to compete, but also just to hang out. He didn’t use the word, but what he’s describing sounds like the so-called Ready Player One-like Metaverse that numerous companies are trying to create.

For Gabrielson, he said he believes cloud computing will have a major impact on games in the future, and Battlefield in particular. Game logic and processing for things like AI, shredding, and procedural content can be downloaded to the cloud to help unleash local processing power. With cloud computing, DICE developers can do “really large-scale computing,” Gabrielson said, noting that there are only a couple of years to go. He stopped saying what impact this might have on Battlefield in particular, but Gabrielson said FPS fans should expect to see some “pretty cool shooter games” thanks to cloud computing.

Here are some other quick tips from what was discussed in the panel:

Gabrielson loved Battlefield 4’s Tablet Commander feature and hopes it will appear in a future Battlefield game along the way. Live destruction, first introduced in Battlefield Bad Company and now hallmark of the franchise, wasn’t originally seen as a “healthy” idea. Grass said the DICE team believed in it, and pushed to do so, and eventually got into the game and has now become a core and fundamental component of the Battlefield series. Titans and wall-running were cut from Titanfall 2 because the developers wanted a slower paced game. The Titans were too OP, and it became too difficult to balance, Grenier said. People assume that the developers are some of the best and most skilled players of their games, but Zampella says this isn’t true, aside from the first few hours after a game release. Developing a Battlefield 2042 map takes about 6-12 months, Gabrielson said.

Also during the EA Play Live Spotlight series, Respawn teased the next Apex Legends hero and revealed that ranked arenas will arrive in season 10.
