Internal Google Meet settings for meetings within the amplified IT domain

[ad_1]

It’s time to celebrate! Gone are the days of craving walled gardens around our Google meetings! Here are just the days of the meetings within the domain. The controls are now available in the Admin console and we’re happy to show you where to find them and how to set them up. Log into the Admin console at Apps> Google Workspace> Google Meet to find Meet security settings. To get started, you should always make sure you’ve selected the correct organizational unit. This setting is only for organizational units at this time and is not accessible by groups. Once confirmed, you can explore the setting options.

The first setting is called Domain and defines who can join meetings created by your organization. Therefore, you can only allow domain users to participate in events created in the domain. This establishes half of the walled garden approach, which prohibits outside intruders from attending your events. Since students shouldn’t be allowed to create their own meetings, these settings are better suited to staff members. If staff members might be inviting some external organizations or individuals, you should consider leaving the default Users logged in with a Google account or logging in by phone. This will allow external users to join IF they have a Google account (which is quick to set up when needed). Now, this may change due to some upcoming Classroom and Meet settings that will only allow you to join meetings created in Classroom within the domain. That setting will then allow you to open the staff domain setting to All users (including users who aren’t signed in with a Google account) if you want to make it easier for strangers to join your meetings. To reiterate, students shouldn’t create meetings so these settings don’t apply to them, but it might be in your best interest to set students to Only users in your organization or users who join using a phone. This is only in case students are given the option to create their own meetings. In addition to domain settings, you can also configure which meetings users in your organization can join. This is done through login settings, and by default, users can join meetings created in any Workspace organization. However, staff members may want and need to meet people outside of your domain, so it is recommended that they be set to Any Meeting, including meetings created with personal accounts. This will allow them to join meetings externally as needed and will not hinder their use of Meet. To complete the walled garden for students, set up Meetings created only in your organization. This will prevent students from attending meetings in other domains. While you may consider it for higher levels, you would enable it if they meet with outside groups.

These settings will be essential to control how you join meetings in our domain. These can be used to further lock down the settings if needed. Our recommendations as always are these, recommendations, and it is important that you evaluate the needs of your institution before changing any settings in the Admin console.
