The Gathering overwhelmed Hullbreacher card has been banned in Commander

The Commander Rules Committee has decided to remove Hullbreacher from the format, putting an end to an era of excess Treasure and card theft.

The supervisors of Commander, the most popular format in Magic: The Gathering, banned the Hullbreacher card from last year’s Commander Legends. The popular Wizards of the Coast card game is traditionally a one-on-one affair, with players bringing 60-card decks to the table for a variety of matches. Commander oversizes decks to 100 cards and adds two more players to the mix, opening up many strategies unique to the format. Commander also leverages cards from throughout Magic history, creating plenty of opportunities for powerful card combinations that can quickly get through the entire game.

Hullbreacher is a merman pirate who can fall early in a match and hold his own in the stats department. However, the creature’s true power lies in its ability to appear on the battlefield during any turn and steal resources from opponents instantly. When it comes, any occurrence of opponents getting additional cards from their decks becomes an extra way for Hullbreacher’s controller. Since Commander is a four-player format, its ability can also activate multiple times in a single round and even synergize with specific Commander legendary creatures, giving players who use it a big advantage on the next turn.

In a new post on the Commander Rules Committee’s official website, Hullbreacher was officially banned from Magic: The Gatheringformat. The card has been controversial since its arrival due to its disruptive ability, but it seems to have crossed the line when players started designing strategies around the card. Players would play the pirate and then play cards that made opponents draw cards as a disadvantage. Instead of helping opponents, Hullbreacher would make sure only one player got the card’s intended advantage, a result the Commander Rules Committee found unsatisfactory. The ban is instant, leaving the card legal only in games using Legacy and Vintage, the two oldest (and most expensive) formats of Magic.

Hullbreacher’s ban was well received by a good portion of the Commander audience, with many agreeing that the paper was warping the format. The name Hullbreacher has also been trending on Twitter all day, showing the immense popularity of the Commander format among Magic: The Gathering players. Commander is unique in that its rules and regulations are set by a group outside of Wizards of the Coast, the company that creates the card game and regulates every other popular format. Magic: the Gathering cardbans have been much more common in recent years within Magic, but the Hullbreacher ban is bound to cause less hype simply because it comes from outside the game manufacturer’s corporate walls.

While many Magic: The Gathering players will put their Hullbreachers in their binders and won’t take them out anytime soon, there are still plenty of new cards to replace them with. The community is preparing for the release of the first complete crossover set of Magic, a new group of themed MTGcards after Dungeons and Dragons. With full draft booster packs and Commander decks releasing in the coming weeks, the release of Hullbreacher will soon fade from memory as the cycle continues.
