Computer scientists receive the inauguration of the Google Research Awards

Two assistant professors of computer science at UCLA’s Samueli School of Engineering, Kai-Wei Chang and Cho-Jui Hsieh, each received a $ 60,000 award from Google’s recently launched Research Scholar Program.

Google announced its first cohort of 86 recipients in April, representing more than 50 universities in 15 countries. The program was created to support early career faculty working on cutting-edge research in many areas of computing, including machine learning, human-computer interaction, health research, and others.

Chang, whose research is on the nexus between natural language processing and machine learning, will explore certified robustness against linguistic differences in interlingual transfer.

Hsieh, which focuses on developing novel algorithms for large-scale machine learning problems, received the proposed research award on scalability and tuning for neural network optimizers.

Another UCLA faculty, Miriam Marlier, was also selected to receive the award. Assistant Professor of Global Environmental Change at UCLA’s Fielding School of Public Health, Marlier will focus on mapping California’s compound climate hazards into the Google Earth engine.
