Kadambini Ganguly, the first Indian doctor, awarded by Google Doodle

Google’s doodle recalled Kadambini Ganguly on Sunday, the first woman to receive medical training in India. The Doodle is illustrated by the artist Oddrija from Bengaluru. Born on July 18, 1861 in Bhagalpur, British India, now Bangladesh, Ganguly was a vocal activist for the empowerment of women, a doctor and a freedom fighter.

Her father, a co-founder of India’s first women’s rights organization, enrolled Ganguly in school during a time when education was rare for Indian women. She took the opportunity and in 1883, Ganguly and her peer Chandramukhi BasuIn became the first women to graduate from college in Indian history.

Shortly after graduation, Ganguly married professor and activist Dwarkanath Ganguly, who encouraged her to pursue a medical degree. She persisted despite numerous initial rejections until she was admitted to Calcutta Medical College.

She graduated in 1886, once again making history as the first woman to become an educated doctor in India. After working and studying in the UK, he earned three further doctoral certifications with a major in gynecology and returned to India in 1890 to open his own private practice.

Ganguly sought to uplift other women in India through medical service and activism in the women’s rights movement of India. Among many other campaigns, Ganguly joined six others to form the first female-only delegation of the Indian National Congress of 1889.

The 2020 biographical television series Prothoma Kadambini based on the life of Gangulys reinvigorated her legacy by telling her inspiring story to a new generation.

Sharing her thoughts on the Doodle on the Google page, artist Oddrija said: “In the year of the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw how medical infrastructure and doctors were hailed as heroes and heroes for becoming the saviors of the world needs. Looking back in time, Kadambini Ganguly has been at the forefront of her contribution to medical infrastructure in India with her indomitable spirit and curiosity that earned her a triple degree in her Western Medicine studies.

In the same spirit, working on this Doodle was a time of great pride to meet a young and lively woman from pre-independence Bangladesh because my family roots are also in Bangladesh. Alongside the same, I got to represent some aspects of my hometown which is Calcutta (Ganguly studied at Calcutta Medical College and worked extensively in many Calcutta hospitals). “

When asked about her first thoughts when asked to work on this Doodle, she said, “Simply put, I can do a Google Doodle about a personality who comes from my hometown, spoke my native language and created a big change back in its time. It was a proud moment for a Bengali! “
