Google, VW, Toyota eager to develop car operating systems

With software-defined vehicles emerging as a new trend for the automotive industry, automotive operating systems and software programs will become a new field of competition in the market, prompting related players to step up development of relevant solutions, according to Digitimes Research.

Tesla has taken the lead in mass-producing an integrated operating system for its electric vehicles, and web giant Google is building its Android automotive operating system (AAOS) looking to incorporate its abundant ecosystem of Android applications into vehicles, while Major car manufacturers including Volkswagen (VW) and Toyota, each with an annual production of over 10 million units, are also developing operating systems that can integrate software functions and serve as common software platforms for all of their vehicles.

Google’s AAOS will integrate its killer-level voice assistant and mapping functions into the center consoles of digital cars and is also expected to incorporate the ecosystem of Android applications. AAOS is expected to be adopted for 10 car models to be launched by automakers including Volvo and General Motors (GM) by the end of 2021, Digitimes Research has indicated.

VW is also expected to release a new VW.OS 2.0 operating system in 2024 and increase the ratio for its internally developed software systems to 60% by 2025.

Toyota will open its Arene OS operating system and software development kits to third-party software developers through the open source social media GitHub, allowing them to design related apps and join its unique ecosystem of applications.
