Google
The past year has certainly made things like travel interesting, to say the least. Google has now added some useful features to Google Maps to make traveling a little easier, or even just getting to work or getting around town.
First, Google has expanded its public transport crowding forecast to over 10,000 transit agencies in 100 countries. With transit rates starting to rise now, the feature will help you get a better idea of when local transport is at its peak so you can more easily gauge when you want to get on a train. Instead of taking the risk during rush hour, you can now easily see when traffic is likely to drop and enjoy a more pleasant spacious ride.
Google is using its AI technology for these predictions, taking the contributions that users have made via Google Maps and considering the global historical trends of the location. It is also currently experimenting with a live crowding information feature in both New York and Sydney, which shows even more detail “down to the level of the transport car”.
For Android users, you can also get more information on how you are spending your time away from home, thanks to the new Timeline Insights tab. If you’ve turned on Location History, you’ll see a new tab in your history that’s only visible to you. It shows you your monthly trends, such as how much time you spent flying, walking or driving, along with how much time you spent in shops, restaurants, airports and so on.
Also in the Timeline tab is now Trips. This allows you to remember all the fun past trips you have taken. Remember that oceanfront restaurant you dined at in California? Or that gorgeous cabin you stayed in in Banff? Now you can take a journey through memory without leaving home. Trips also makes it easy to share these destinations with friends who need travel advice. Google has also made it easy to manage all of this data in bulk, online, or with automatic deletion controls from the history.
Finally, Google has improved its Reviews feature for Android and iOS users, allowing you to leave more detailed reviews for restaurants, shops, and other businesses you’ve visited. You can easily choose how many stars you want to leave, type a short comment and leave photos. Additionally, you will be able to include additional information, such as whether you have dined, taken a take away or ordered a delivery what meal you ordered; and how much did you spend per person during your visit. This makes your reviews more useful to others and vice versa.
