Moscow (Reuters) – Russian authorities have access to the website of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, who was jailed for parliamentary elections on Monday, and the websites of 48 other people and organizations linked to him. Blocked with.
A Russian court last month approved a prosecutor’s request to declare organizations linked to Navalny radical, effectively banning them and allowing his allies to participate in September’s House of Representatives elections. Stopped.
The United States and Britain accused the court of ruling as a baseless blow to Russian political opposition.
Russian internet regulator Roskomnadzor said in a statement to Reuters on Monday that it had decided to block the banned movement’s main website, navalny.com and other parts of Russia, at the president’s request of the prosecutor.
The site said the court-banned move helped spread advertising and continue illegal activities.
Navalny’s team condemned the move and said on social media that they hoped authorities would target smart voting websites soon.
Navalny’s ally Leonid Volkov said he will soon explain what people should do to avoid blocking websites.
Navalny is President Vladimir Putin’s foremost domestic critic and has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for parole violation, he said. His imprisonment exacerbated tensions in relations between Russia and the West, which demanded his release.
