The Bristol Rovers have apologized “wholeheartedly” to anyone offended by a statement released by the club on Monday night.

After manager Joey Barton pleaded not guilty to assault by beating in Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning, where the manager was accused of assaulting his wife Georgia in June, Rovers responded with a club declaration around 9 p.m.

In that statement, the club made a comment that Bristol Live chose not to publish on legal grounds due to pending criminal proceedings.

The comment offended many, both supporters and the general public, encouraging criticism of Refuge, a domestic violence charity.

On Tuesday, Rovers issued a follow-up statement in the form of an open letter from owner Wael Al-Qadi.

He said: “The last four days have been difficult for all of us and I have seen firsthand that there is a division within the fan base which is not what we want until one. new season.

“First of all, I think it’s really important to confirm that as a club we are strongly opposed to any form of violence. Anyone found guilty of such offenses will be immediately dismissed. I understand the concerns expressed by a number of you.

“However, in accordance with basic principles of UK law, I believe you are innocent until proven guilty.

“I have seen and understood the response to the statement released last night. Given that this is a legal question, what we can and cannot say as a club is heavily restricted.

“Having said that, I think it’s important that some context be given to the commentary as I know it caused some distress.

“We did not want to downplay the accusations of domestic violence in any way.”

Refuge defied Rovers following the statement, arguing that the language used by the club could exacerbate the idea that victims of domestic violence think they won’t be believed if they come forward.

Al-Qadi continued, “I know this may have been misinterpreted in last night’s statement and I sincerely apologize to anyone who was offended.

“This period will undoubtedly have a strained relationship, however, I hope we can maintain your trust as we seek to continue to build the club and support our community at large.

“I hope you can all join me in supporting the team this season, we need your support more than ever.”

Barton will not be on the sideline for the Rovers’ friendly against Havant and Waterlooville on Tuesday, with assistant manager Clint Hill in charge.

The club’s Monday press release said Barton will be spending a few days at home with his family.
