Deficient School District Racism Survey

MADISON, Wisconsin (AP) A school district in southeastern Wisconsin failed to properly investigate allegations of parental racism in its high school last year, the State Department of Education concluded.

DPI officials concluded Friday that the Cedarburg school district had not established enough facts to make decisions and ordered the district to launch a new investigation.

According to the DPI ruling, parent Jessie Mchomvu filed a complaint with the district in October, alleging that her biracial child overheard another high school student praising Kyle Rittenhouse and swearing to drive a vehicle during a Black Lives Matter protest. Rittenhouse, who is white, shot dead two people during a demonstration against police brutality in Kenosha last August. He will be tried in November for homicide.

Mchomvu also alleged that her child frequently heard racial slurs against black people in the hallways, that students displayed Confederate flags on their vehicles, and wore clothing with messages supporting the police and Donald Trump.

The district hired an external investigator to investigate the complaint. The investigator determined that there was no evidence of racial harassment or intimidation after interviewing Mchomvu and a district employee. The district adopted the investigators’ conclusion.
