BARCELONA, Spain (AP) – Racist abuse against teenage player Ilaix Moriba on social media was condemned by Barcelona on Tuesday.
Moriba, 18, had previously used his TikTok account to denounce the abuse he suffered while negotiating the renewal of his contract with the Catalan club.
He posted a video of himself checking social media on a cell phone as some of the slurs popped up on the screen. He shook his head and wrote, “Really?
Barcelona posted the same video on their Twitter accounts with the phrases “We love football. We fight racism.”
Moriba, one of the club’s up-and-coming stars, was a regular at Barcelona’s B squad and made his first-team debut last season. He trained with Team B during contract negotiations.
Some Barcelona fans have been unhappy with Moriba as he still hasn’t accepted a new contract.
The club are in financial difficulties and cut big contracts with their players.
