A delegation of leaders from Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), including former ministers, met with police commissioner Rakesh Agrawal on Wednesday and demanded the immediate arrest of Lok Insaaf party leader Simarjeet Singh Bains, accused of rape.
The delegation includes SAD District Chairman Ranjit Singh Dhillon, former ministers Maheshinder Singh Grewal and Hira Singh Gabria, and former SAD MP Harish Rai Dhanda.
Recently, the police had started a program in which they promised to help rape victims to get justice quickly and to rehabilitate them. Isn’t the 44-year-old woman who was tortured by the MLA a rape victim? The police must act or we will continue our agitation, Grewal said, adding that he did not believe the police were working under pressure.
Hailing the bravery of the victims, Dhanda said, “Bains not only subjected the victim to rape and exploitation, but also threatened and intimidated her. We will not rest until justice is served.
Dhillon said that at a time when the state apparatus denies justice to a victim, it is the court of law that comes to the rescue and has restored people’s confidence in the system. However, despite court orders, the police have yet to act.
Akali leaders recently staged a dharna outside the police commissioner’s office and also raided the residence of Food and Civilian Supply Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu.
Allegations of a conspiracy to tarnish my image: Bains
Meanwhile, Bains called the allegations a political plot by the SAD to tarnish its image. He said he has full confidence in the justice system.
During the SAD’s appeal for his arrest, Bains said that no court ordered my arrest. Police have been ordered to register a case and investigate the case. During this time, I will continue to work in my office as usual.
