HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) – The family of a former Short Pump Middle School football player have settled a lawsuit against the school system over a racist Snapchat video.
The video was taken on October 13, 2017 and showed white members of the soccer team faking sex acts on a black teammate while using racist slurs.
The seventh-grade student featured in the video, identified as “DJ” in court documents, had to leave school after the video was posted and his environment has become so hostile and uncomfortable due to the daily harassment, according to the police. complaint.
PREVIOUS COVER: Lawsuit filed against Henrico schools two years after racist video in locker room
The lawsuit claimed that the school principal, football coach and his athletic director failed to properly supervise the players in the locker rooms, which created an environment in which plaintiff DJ was vulnerable to bullying and harassment, and created an opportunity for the claimant DJ to experience battery and sexual assault where an opportunity would not have otherwise existed with proper supervision.
The team lost the rest of the season because of the incident, but the team members were allowed to train.
While the lawsuit originally sought $ 350,000, the settlement did not disclose how much money the family had settled.
