The Supreme Council for Radio and Television (RTK) has fined Bloomberg HT over comments made by journalist Fatih Altayl on a TV show.

lhan Ta, RTK member of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), noted that the fine came after Altayl was criticized by presidential communications director Fahrettin Altun for a column on the president.

A complaint filed by the Turkish Football Federation against Altayl three months ago was put on the agenda of the last council meeting, Ta said. Bloomberg HT was fined 3% of its advertising revenue the previous month, he added.

In a video message he posted on July 22 to mark Eid al-Adha, President Recep Tayyip Erdoan was seen falling asleep momentarily.

Altayl, a columnist for Habertrk, who belongs to the same media group as Bloomberg HT, wrote that posting the video without removing that part was a notable mistake by Erdoan’s team.

Later that day, Altayl posted another article, claiming that he was informed that the video message was originally broadcast live. It was later replaced with an edited video.

The presidential communications officer targeted Altayl and Habertrk after the articles, claiming that “Habertrk never gives up on defamation, disinformation and fake news.”

“We condemn Habertrk because of this publication, which can be seen as an example of ‘terror of lies’ as stated by the President, and expect an immediate apology,” Altun said in a written statement.

In response to Altun, Habertrk said there was nothing forcing them to apologize as Altayl corrected his mistake in the first article. (K / VK)
