The NHL has said it will investigate an allegation apparently made by wife Evander Kane that the San Jose Sharks forward bet on his own games and intentionally tried to lose for game gain.
The league said on Twitter on Saturday night that it had been made aware of the social media posts and planned to conduct a full investigation.
An Instagram account, appearing to belong to Kane’s wife, Anna, posted in a story: “How does the NHL let a compulsive gambling addict keep playing when he is obviously playing games to earn money? ‘money? Hmm maybe someone needs to sort this out. “
She added: “Can someone ask (Commissioner) Gary Bettman how they let a player play their own games? Bet and win with bookies on their own games?”
In a separate article, Anna Kane accused her husband of partying in Europe while asking him to sell her wedding ring to survive and wrote that she couldn’t afford to buy infant formula for their child.
The NHL said, “The integrity of our game is paramount and the League takes these allegations very seriously.
A spokesperson for the Sharks team wrote in an email to The Associated Press: “The San Jose Sharks have been in contact with the National Hockey League today regarding the serious allegations against Evander Kane. We are supporting a full and transparent investigation of the situation to maintain the integrity of the game and consistency with our team’s values. ”
The history of the game and Kane’s finances have been common knowledge for some time. A Las Vegas Strip casino sued Kane in 2019, alleging he failed to repay a $ 500,000 gambling debt accumulated in a playoff series against the Golden Knights.
Since the Supreme Court paved the way for the legalization of sports betting in the United States and more and more states have adopted it, the NHL has seized the opportunities and entered into several partnerships with sports betting and d ‘other betting organizations.
Reached by email ahead of the league’s announcement, Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said only one statement would be forthcoming. The league said it would not make any further comment at this time.
A message sent to Kane’s agent was not immediately returned.
Kane, 29, has three seasons in a seven-year, $ 49 million contract. He’s with his third organization after being drafted and making his debut with Atlanta / Winnipeg and a stint at Buffalo. According to Capfriendly, who charts the hockey payroll, he made just under $ 56 million during his NHL career.
Last season, he had 22 goals and 27 assists in 56 games.
