Shiawassee County Commissioners Chairman resigns after criticism of risk premium

SHIAWASSEE COUNTY, Michigan (WLNS) – At a meeting of the Shiawassee County Commissioner’s Board of Directors today, President Jeremy Root resigned his post and decided to continue as commissioner. The board has appointed Greg Brodeur as the new interim chair of the board.

“I Jeremy Root has resigned my position as chairman of the board of commissioners for Shiawassee with immediate effect. However, I will keep my post as commissioner, ”Root wrote in a letter to the board.

Tonight, community members say they’re relieved that Root has stepped down, but some aren’t thrilled that he’s keeping a spot on the board. “I was happy to hear that he had resigned as president, but I would have been even happier if he had completely disappeared,” said Emily Thomas, a resident of Shiawassee County.

In July, the board of directors voted to give money to county employees, and that included $ 65,000, which would go to the council of commissioners. They say they didn’t know it, but Root did.

In the end, they agreed to return the money. A Genesse County judge ordered the council to decide how it should be distributed.

Many people think the money should be used to help residents.

“It’s our riding, it’s our house, it’s our money. There are people I know who are losing housing and who could use this money so that front-line workers keep their homes,” he said. Thomas said.

New interim president Gregory Brodeur says now is the time to try to rebuild trust with the community after this incident. “I will try to make sure that we are much more professional than possible in the past. Try to calm people’s emotional outbursts, try to make sure that none of the board members feel like they’re on the outside and definitely make sure the audience feels we’re open ” , said Brodeur.

He has been on the board for 7 months and residents like Thomas are eagerly awaiting this new start.

“I hope he completely revamps himself, takes everything we’ve said to heart and moves forward,” Thomas said.
