In my last column, I published comments written by New York Times subscribers about their pride in their children for deciding not to have children. Although they recognized how painful it was to be a grandparent, they nevertheless rejoiced that it would never happen.
Why were these parents so proud of their children’s decision not to give them grandchildren?
Because of climate change.
You read correctly. Better not to have grandchildren than to have grandchildren who will suffer and most likely die from global warming.
I described these people as deranged because it takes a deranged person to think climate change is a reason to celebrate never being a grandparent.
And who, I asked, produced these deranged parents?
The media and universities.
What better way to prove the power of the media and universities to pervert people’s minds than to have convinced people to be proud of the fact that they would never be grandparents?
A few days later, the New York Times and its subscribers (you have to be a subscriber to comment) provided further evidence of the psychopathology that pervades the left.
New York Times columnist David Brooks wrote a column titled “What’s Tearing American Families Up?” Although Brooks offered no answer to his “I confess, I don’t understand what’s causing this” question, he wrote, he cited important data. For example, he linked it to a 2015 study in the Journal of Psychology and Behavioral Science, which reported that at least 27% of Americans are separated from a family member.
Having addressed this topic regularly on my national radio show for 20 years, in print (“Adults Who Don’t Talk to a Parent,” Jewish Journal, July 19, 2011) and video (PragerU Fireside Chat # 72, 6 March 2011) 2019), I can attest to the prevalence of the catastrophe of a child of full age who chose to sever all contact with a parent. Both men and women cried on my show talking about their insane son or daughter.
Plus, given that the statistic Brooks cites is from a 2015 study, there’s no doubt that things got worse (because of the Trump presidency and, now, the awakening).
Why did this happen?
In summary, and in no order of importance, I would pose the following causes:
Narcissism: Many Americans were brought up believing they had countless rights but few obligations.
Radical Secularism: The belief that it is commanded to “honor one’s father and mother” has died out along with other core Judeo-Christian values.
Naivety About Life: Many Americans, especially among the non-religious and well-educated, believe that life is meant to be painless. And when it doesn’t, it’s someone else’s fault (usually parents or white people).
Incompetent Psychotherapists: If most psychotherapists were ineffective, their patients would only waste their money. But many are not just ineffective; they do harm. Whenever I talk to a parent whose child refuses to communicate with them, I ask the parent if their child has discussed this issue with their therapist. Almost always the answer is yes. And almost always, the therapist encouraged the patient in his decision to sever relations with his parents.
Now back to Brooks’ article. I reread what New York Times subscribers had to say, this time about “What’s Tearing American Families Up?” “
Like the Times readers who wrote about their pride in not becoming a grandparent, their child having decided not to have children because of climate change, I again encountered disturbance among New York readers. Times.
That hardly any Times reader bothered to judge the sons and daughters who have withdrawn from their parents’ lives was bad enough. What pushed the responses into the mentally imbalanced category is that many readers actually explained these crucial decisions by blaming capitalism, poverty, former President Donald Trump and, believe it or not, change. climate.
Among the dozens of examples, here are a few:
Peter, Chicago: “This is what global capitalism does best. Social destruction.
Boone, Wild West: “My wife is estranged from four of her five siblings, and it’s totally down to Trump, whom they continue to support, which is just inexcusable. I totally agree.”
Susan T., Brooklyn, New York: “Fox and Trump are the main reasons for the estrangement right now.
Mike, Fort Smith, Arkansas: “Trump and Fox News have created a whole generation of fools that no one can relate to. “
Yog_Sothoth, United States: “Poverty tears families apart. It’s not complicated.
SB, New York: “If my mom or dad becomes a murderer, terrorist, (or) Republican… will I still love my parent? Here the answer is less certain.
Tubbercurry, USA: “Please, Mr. Brooks, educate yourself on this climate crisis. “
GBR, New England: “Over the past few years my view of them (my parents) as people has changed dramatically. Can you guess what he did? His initials are DJT. Sometimes you can have loving parents who treated you well, stood up for you, gave you opportunities, encouragement and support … but who are just not good people when seen with an adult …
Thomas Zaslavsky, Binghamton, New York: “What tears American families apart? Lack of decent jobs, or jobs. The correlation is too strong to be ignored.
RP, California: “Feminism has freed women from dependence on men, and we celebrate that… Celebrate that no one is tied to anyone who causes them pain.
If you want to know how the left screwed up the minds, hearts and consciences of the people, just read the commentary sections accompanying the New York Times articles. Then read the comments accompanying the Wall Street Journal articles. You may disagree with them, but you won’t come across anything so irrational or mean, let alone bothered.
