Neale Hanvey reports allegation of espionage to House of Commons security team

ALBA MP Neale Hanvey spoke to Westminster security after claiming that another party had “hired” an investigator to spy on him.

The Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath MP, who left the SNP ahead of the Holyrood election to join Alex Salmond’s newly formed Alba, said he was seeking advice but would make “no further comment” on it.

Hanvey had tweeted, “If another political party hired a private investigator to spy on me, whether as an MP or an opposing MP, is there a way to establish and challenge this?

“If MI5 does not have the right to spy on MPs, it looks like a serious breach.”

The MP is one of two Alba representatives in Westminster alongside Kenny MacAskill. Both members left the SNP over concerns about the pace of their former party’s push for independence.

Hanvey told the Daily Record: “An allegation has been made to me and I am seeking advice.

“I reported the matter to Parliament’s security team, who passed on advice on how to secure my devices.”

The House of Commons does not speak out on security matters.

Earlier this week, Alba requested additional capacity for their next conference – which will be held the same weekend as the SNP conference – because it sold out in less than 48 hours.

Last week, the party welcomed its 6,000th member with veteran SNP activist Moira Brown.
